Best Car Air Freshener UK: Hanging, Spray, Diffuser or Odour Eliminator

Hanging cards, pump sprays, diffusers and odour eliminators: which car air freshener suits you, how to get rid of a bad smell for good, and the ones we stock.

Best car air freshener UK: Infinity Wax Jellybean spray, the AIRED Aura rose gold diffuser and a Stjärnagloss Roots hanging card on a black leather car console

A good car air freshener is the finishing touch after a clean, but there is a lot of choice: hanging cards, pump sprays, essential oil diffusers and odour eliminators all work differently. This guide explains what each type does, how to get rid of a bad smell for good, and compares the air fresheners and odour eliminators we stock using each maker's own words.

What is the best car air freshener in the UK?

It depends on how you want to use it. A hanging card such as Stjarnagloss Roots is the simple choice, a pump spray such as Infinity Wax Jellybean lets you control how strong the scent is, and the AIRED Aura diffuser works with your own essential oils. If the car smells bad, remove the odour first, then freshen.

Air freshener or odour eliminator?

An air freshener adds a fragrance. An odour eliminator is made to break down or destroy the smell itself. If the car smells of smoke, damp, pets or old food, a freshener only covers it for a while, so treat the cause with an odour eliminator first and add a freshener afterwards.

Types of car air freshener

Every pick below is in stock with us, and every claim comes from the maker's own listing or website.

Hanging cards

The easiest option: hang it and forget it. Stjarnagloss says no detail is complete without a hanging air freshener.

Hang a card where it cannot block your view of the road or swing into your line of sight.

Pump sprays

A spray puts you in control: a couple of pumps for a light scent, more when the car needs it.

  • Infinity Wax Jellybean and Infinity Wax Watermelon: 250ml liquid sprays that Infinity Wax blends from isopropyl, fixatives, emulsifiers and a little distilled water, with no ethanol, and says are safe on all surfaces. Infinity Wax blends them to last on textiles and gives up to 367 sprays from a 250ml bottle. Jellybean opens with wild cherry, strawberry and lemon-lime over brown sugar and vanilla, and Watermelon pairs watermelon with mint and lime.
  • Stjarnagloss Skonhet: a 100ml pump spray with real silver flake in the bottle, which Stjarnagloss says lasts about 6 months of daily use. Its sister spray, Stjarnagloss Stekare, carries real 24k gold flake.
  • Dodo Juice 100ml sprays in three scents: CoCo Loco (coconut), Apple Tease (apple) and Malibu Mist (pina colada).

Because Infinity Wax builds its sprays to last on textiles, a few sprays onto the carpets and under the seats go further than spraying into the air.

Essential oil diffusers

  • AIRED Aura: an electronic diffuser with an aluminium body that AIRED says works with any essential oil. It charges by USB-C, has three timer modes and adjustable intensity, comes with a refillable bottle and stands 14.5cm tall. AIRED also makes 10ml essential oils for it, from Ocean Drift to vanilla and coconut.

Odour eliminators

  • Dakota Odor Bomb: a one-time fogger. Its listing says it destroys odours from tobacco smoke, mildew, cooking and more, treats up to 6000 cubic feet, and that the fragrance fades in about 3 days. The listing's method: set it off on a flat surface, leave the area undisturbed for at least two hours, then ventilate for 30 minutes before going back in.
  • Dakota Zero Smoke: an unscented 59ml spray for smoke odours on clothing, hair and car interiors, with a non-staining formula that its listing says is safe on fabric, carpet and upholstery.
  • ValetPro Femme: a UK-made odour eliminator that ValetPro says breaks down odour molecules and leaves a perfume fragrance. ValetPro's tip: spray it through the interior with the air conditioning on high and the doors closed, so it works through the system.
  • CarPro So2Pure 2.0: a photocatalytic interior coating. CarPro says surfaces treated with it destroy odours and pollutants when exposed to light, and that it kills microbes, mould, mildew, nicotine, pet and chemical odours, with a jasmine scent. CarPro's method for soft surfaces: clean the surface, shake well, spray evenly and let it dry in sunshine.

How do you get rid of a bad smell in a car?

  1. Find the source. Old food, a damp carpet, a forgotten gym bag or pet bedding is usually to blame.
  2. Clean it out. Vacuum thoroughly and clean the seats and carpets, as our guide on how to clean car seats and carpets explains.
  3. Dry anything damp. A wet carpet keeps a musty smell coming back however much fragrance you add.
  4. Treat what is left with an odour eliminator, such as a fogger for the whole cabin or a spray for one area.
  5. Finish with the air freshener you like.

How long does a car air freshener last?

It depends on the type, the heat inside the car and how much air moves through it: fragrance fades faster on hot days and with the fan running. The makers' own figures give a guide: Stjarnagloss says Skonhet lasts about 6 months of daily use, Infinity Wax gives up to 367 sprays from a 250ml bottle, and the Dakota Odor Bomb's listing says its fragrance fades in about 3 days after fogging, once the odour is gone.
