About the range
Medium Cut Foam Pads
Medium cut foam pads sit between cutting and finishing. With a polish they remove light swirls and wash marring in a single stage, and after a heavy cut they remove its haze. The range is led by Autobead Downforce Medium Cut pads, with Lake Country SDO-CCS and HDO-CCS pads, ShineMate Black Diamond and Chemical Guys HEX-Logic.
How to choose
- Light cutting or polishing: a light cutting pad such as the ShineMate Black Diamond orange has more bite, while a polishing pad such as the ShineMate Black Diamond blue finishes better.
- Machine: Lake Country HDO pads are built for long-throw DA polishers, while SDO pads suit a standard DA.
- Size: pick a pad slightly larger than the backing plate so its edge never touches the paint. The 4 inch pads are for a mini polisher and the ShineMate 1.6 inch pads for a nano.
Good to know
- Pad colours mean different things from brand to brand: orange is a cutting pad from Chemical Guys but a light cutting or polishing pad from Lake Country and ShineMate, so go by the name, not the colour.
- For a single stage on a daily driver, pair a medium pad with one of our One Step Polishes.
What is a medium cut polishing pad used for?
Removing light swirls and wash marring with a polish in a single stage, or taking out the haze a heavy cutting pad leaves after a compound. It has more bite than a finishing pad but less than a cutting pad. Choose a pad slightly larger than your backing plate. Our compound vs polish guide explains which product goes on it.
