During washing, dirt removed from the vehicle is carried back into the bucket by the wash mitt. Agitating the mitt against the Grit Guard Insert helps release that contamination, allowing heavier particles to pass through the grid and settle beneath it. The underside divides the lower section of the bucket into four areas, reducing water movement around the settled debris and helping limit its return into the water above.

Grit Guard later developed the Washboard to increase the available cleaning surface. It attaches to the original insert at an angle, allowing a mitt or other wash tool to be worked against a vertical surface while contamination moves down towards the bottom of the bucket. Like the insert, the Washboard is deliberately designed without large flat areas where removed grit can collect.

The Grit Guard range has developed into a complete washing and detailing equipment system. Alongside the original Insert and Washboard are dedicated wash buckets, leak-resistant Gamma Seal lids, bucket dollies, connected dual-bucket systems, detailing carts and the Universal Pad Washer for cleaning polishing pads.

The Universal Pad Washer applies the same separation principle to machine polishing equipment, providing a system for cleaning and conditioning foam, wool and other polishing pads during use. Grit Guard has continued to manufacture its products in the USA, with the company specifically identifying genuine products by its Made in USA marking.
