The Brand

Grit Guard

Grit Guard began in 2002 with a specific problem to solve: reducing the amount of abrasive dirt and grit transferred back onto a vehicle by a wash mitt during contact washing. The result was the Grit Guard® Insert, a purpose-designed bucket insert that sits above the bottom of the wash bucket and provides a surface against which the wash mitt can be agitated and cleaned.

The design was developed as more than a simple plastic grid. The original fluid receptacle and filter system was filed for patent protection in January 2002 and later granted as US Patent 7,025,880. Its construction uses a raised grid and baffles underneath the insert to help separate heavier contamination from the working area of the bucket.

Keeping Contamination Below the Wash Mitt

During washing, dirt removed from the vehicle is carried back into the bucket by the wash mitt. Agitating the mitt against the Grit Guard Insert helps release that contamination, allowing heavier particles to pass through the grid and settle beneath it. The underside divides the lower section of the bucket into four areas, reducing water movement around the settled debris and helping limit its return into the water above.

Grit Guard later developed the Washboard to increase the available cleaning surface. It attaches to the original insert at an angle, allowing a mitt or other wash tool to be worked against a vertical surface while contamination moves down towards the bottom of the bucket. Like the insert, the Washboard is deliberately designed without large flat areas where removed grit can collect.
