Full Description

This is the black Grit Guard insert, the grid that sits in the bottom of a wash bucket and keeps the dirt below your mitt. Black does not show staining from wheel cleaner or iron remover, so it still looks tidy after a season of washing. It is the same insert as the other seven colours we list. The Grit Guard® Inserts fit in the bottom of your wash bucket and separates the grit from the mitt! The inserts radial surface design extracts particles such as dirt, grit and grime from your wash mitt, providing a clean, scratch-free wash mitt every time you go back to the bucket for water. All of the potentially harmful dirt settle in the bottom of the bucket, keeping it out of your mitt and off of your paint. This simple and cost effective method protects your precious painted surfaces from being scratched and saves your paint from swirl marks and scratches.

The best method for extracting harmful dirt and grit from your wash mitt or brush is to agitate your washing utensil while submerged in water.

Grit Guard® is not a gimmick, it's common sense...when your mitt is in the water, the fibers are fluffed up. When you rub your mitt against Grit Guard® in the water, the fluffed up fibers allow the Grit Guard® to extract the dirt, grit and grime. Once dirt settles in the bottom of the bucket, the Grit Guard® keeps it there by separating the wash water into four quadrants, so the water cannot be disturbed. Also works amazingly well on tile grouting! Fits most 3.5 gallon, 4 gallon, 5 gallon and 6 gallon buckets.

How To Use

Using it

  1. Place the insert into the bottom of your wash bucket.
  2. Fill the bucket with clean water and shampoo solution.
  3. Dip your wash mitt into the water and agitate it against the insert.
  4. Let the grit settle through the radial surface to the base of the bucket.
  5. Continue washing and reloading your mitt from the same bucket.

Cleaning and storage

  1. Empty the bucket and remove the insert after use.
  2. Rinse the insert thoroughly to remove any trapped grit.
  3. Allow it to dry before storing.
  4. Store it with your wash bucket or Grit Guard accessories.

Top Tip: Agitate your wash mitt firmly against the insert each time before loading it, so trapped grit is released back to the base.

The Brand

Grit Guard

Grit Guard is the American company behind the original bucket insert, the Grit Guard Insert. In 2002 its founder, Doug Lamb, built prototype after prototype of a settling filter for washing his favourite red car: a grid that lets dirt come out of the wash mitt, sink to the bottom of the bucket and stay there instead of going back onto the paint. Grit Guard holds US patent 7,025,880 for the Insert, is family-owned and operated, and designs and makes its products in the USA, from Bellefontaine, Ohio.

Grit Guard products

The Insert. The Grit Guard Insert sits in the bottom of the wash bucket. Its radial surface pulls dirt and grit out of the mitt as you agitate it under the water, and the dirt settles at the bottom of the bucket, below the grid and away from the mitt. It measures 263mm across and 63mm tall and fits most 3.5 to 6 US gallon buckets. We list it in black, blue, gold, green, red, silver, white and yellow, so you can colour-code the wash, rinse and wheel buckets; black does not show staining from wheel cleaner.

The Washboard. The Washboard fits onto the Insert and gives the mitt or brush a second surface to rub against on a downward stroke, so grit is pulled out and drops to the bottom. Like the Insert it has no flat ledges for dirt to collect on. It needs an Insert to fit; the Insert is not included.

Buckets and lids. The transparent wash buckets come in clear, black, blue, red and orange, along with a white wash bucket (bucket only), and the 12-inch bucket lid cushion, in black or red, sits on a lidded 5 gallon bucket to give you a 1-inch foam seat or kneeler while you work on the lower parts of the car.

Pad care. Pad Renewing Solution is a concentrated spray that breaks down petroleum- and water-based compounds on buffing pads: two or three sprays release dried, hardened compound. It is non-corrosive and residue-free, and also works as a general purpose cleaner.

The two-bucket wash with Grit Guard

Most swirl marks come from grit dragged across the paint by the wash mitt. The two-bucket method with a Grit Guard Insert in each bucket keeps that grit away from the mitt:

  • Wash bucket: shampoo solution with a Grit Guard Insert at the bottom.
  • Rinse bucket: clean water with a second Insert, and a Washboard if you have one.

Load the mitt in the wash bucket, wash one panel from the top down, then rub the mitt across the Insert in the rinse bucket so the dirt drops to the bottom. Go back to the wash bucket for more solution and move to the next panel. Do the wheels last, or with a separate bucket, mitt and brushes, so brake dust never meets the paint; a different colour Insert makes that bucket easy to spot.

Pre-washing with a snow foam or citrus pre-wash first takes off more of the loose dirt before the mitt touches the car.
