About the range
Heavy Cut Compounds
Heavy cut compounds are the most aggressive polishing stage, used first on deep swirls, scratches, oxidised paint and the marks left by wet sanding. The range covers Menzerna from Super Heavy Cut 300 to Heavy Cutting 1100, CarPro UltraCut and ClearCut, Sonax CutMax and Koch-Chemie Heavy Cut H8.02, plus compounds from Rupes, Angelwax, Autobrite Direct and Autobead.
How to choose
- Use the least cut that removes the defect. For ordinary wash swirls, Medium Cut Compounds take off less clear coat.
- There is no shared scale, so one maker's heavy cut can be another's medium: compare grades within a brand.
- Pair a heavy compound with a cutting pad: Wool Pads and Microfibre Pads cut fastest, Heavy Cut Foam Pads leave less haze.
Good to know
- Heavy cutting leaves its own haze, so plan a second stage with Finishing Polishes.
- A scratch that catches a fingernail is usually too deep to polish out safely. Paint is thinnest on edges, body lines and around badges, so mask them with Masking Tapes.
- Wipe with Panel Wipe & IPA before judging: polishing oils can hide swirls that return after a wash.
Will cutting compound remove scratches?
Swirls and light scratches, yes: it levels the clear coat around them. Deeper scratches that catch a fingernail are usually beyond safe polishing. Follow a heavy compound with a finishing polish to remove the haze it leaves.
