We would start with separate cloths for paint, glass, interior surfaces and wheels, then choose the pile for each job. What are the best microfibre cloths for cars in the UK?
A small set rather than one cloth. Microfibre cloths do most of the work in a detail once the car is washed: wiping off quick detailers and wax, cleaning glass, levelling coatings and tackling wheels and interiors, so the best car cleaning cloths are the ones matched to each job.
We explain GSM, pile and edges so you can choose from our microfibre cloths by the work they need to do, rather than assuming one thick cloth suits every surface.
What does GSM mean on a microfibre cloth?
GSM means grams per square metre: how heavy the microfibre is. A higher figure usually means a thicker, plusher pile that holds more liquid and cushions the paint, while a lower figure gives a thinner cloth that is easier to fold and wring out. The cloths below run from 180 GSM on the Maxshine detailing cloths to 500 GSM on the FibreKing Ultimate Detailer.
The figures show the difference: the 315 GSM Silver Label holds up to eight times its weight in water, and the 400 GSM Gold Label up to ten times.
Edged or edgeless?
We look for a soft, well-finished edge and remove any unsuitable tag before paintwork use. An edgeless construction is useful, but cleanliness and pressure still matter: grit, hardened product and damaged fibres can mark paint regardless of the edge design. Inspect each cloth before using it.
Glass cloths are built differently. FibreKing finishes its Gold Label Korean and Carbon glass cloths with overlock stitched edges, which stop them fraying.
Which microfibre cloth for which job?
These options cover different jobs. We would choose a few appropriate cloths first and keep enough clean spares to change them as they load up. Bulk packs make sense for frequent work, but they are not a requirement for looking after one car.
Paintwork, quick detailers and wax
40 x 40cm, 500 GSM coral fleece microfibre, edgeless, made in South Korea and sold in packs of three. It is made for removing detailing sprays, wax, compound, sealant and polish, for final buffing and for rinseless and waterless washing.
40.6 x 40.6cm, 400 GSM, a 70/30 polyester and polyamide blend. It is an option for residue removal, provided the cloth is clean and the pile suits the product. We use light pressure and inspect for contamination rather than treating any cloth as scratch-proof.

Ceramic coatings
40 x 40cm, 400 GSM, an 80/20 polyester and polyamide blend, sold in packs of three. One side has a long plush pile for delicate work and the other a tight, flat weave for heavier cleaning, making it an option for levelling uncured coating residue when the coating instructions specify a suitable microfibre. This does not mean it removes a fully cured ceramic coating.
We recommend turning to a fresh, dry face frequently while levelling uncured coating residue and following the coating's specified working time. Keep those cloths separate afterwards; cured residue can harden in the fibres, making them unsuitable for later paintwork use.
Glass and mirrors
The best car glass cleaning cloth is dense and pile-free, so it leaves no lint or streaks.

How many microfibre cloths do you need?
More than most people expect. A cloth that has picked up wheel grime or interior dirt should not go back on the paint, so keep separate cloths for paint, glass, wheels and the interior. Colour coding makes that easy: the FibreKing Silver and Gold Label 36 packs come in several colours, so each job can have its own.
For one car, we would start with a few paint-finishing cloths, two glass cloths and separate cloths for interior and wheel work, then add spares as your routine develops. A bulk pack is convenient for frequent details or several cars, not a minimum requirement.
How do you use a microfibre cloth without scratching?
Start on a clean car, keep turning to a clean face and use light pressure. A cloth that has touched the ground stays off the paint.
- Start on a clean car: a cloth cannot make up for grit left behind, so wash first, as our guide on how to wash your car safely explains.
- Fold it into four: that gives eight clean faces, and you turn to a fresh one as each loads up.
- Use light pressure: let the product do the work.
- Retire dropped cloths: if a cloth touches the ground, put it aside for washing and inspection before any further use. Painted wheels can be scratched too, so do not move a gritty cloth straight to wheel duty.
Common questions
How do you wash microfibre cloths?
Wash them with a dedicated microfibre detergent, with other microfibre only, away from cotton items that shed lint. Wash them on a gentle 30 to 40 degree cycle, then air drying or a cool tumble dry on the lowest setting. Never use fabric softener. Conditioners damage how well microfibre absorbs and cleans, and chlorine bleach and ironing are out too. Wash the cloths from wheels and engine bays apart from your paint cloths.
Can you use the same microfibre cloth on paint and wheels?
No. A cloth that has picked up wheel grime or brake dust can carry grit back onto the paint, so keep separate cloths for paint, glass, wheels and the interior. The FibreKing Silver and Gold Label 36 packs come in several colours, so each job can have its own.
Which microfibre cloth should you use on a ceramic coating?
For application, use the clean microfibre type specified by the coating manufacturer to level uncured residue within its working time. We recommend changing cloth faces often and isolating used coating cloths afterwards. A cured coating generally needs a dedicated removal process; it is not wiped off with an ordinary cloth.
