Brown, dull tyre sidewalls can make a freshly washed car look unfinished. The good news is that tyre browning is easy to remove with the right cleaner and a stiff brush. This guide explains what causes it, how to clean it off properly, and which tyre cleaners, brushes and dressings in our range do the job, using each maker's own directions.
How do you remove tyre browning?
Spray a dedicated tyre cleaner onto the wet sidewall, scrub it with a stiff tyre brush and rinse, then repeat until the suds come off white rather than brown. Let the tyre dry fully before you apply a tyre dressing. Browning slowly comes back as the tyre ages, so clean the sidewalls at every wash.
What causes tyre browning?
Tyre browning, also called blooming, comes from the tyre itself. Tyre makers add antiozonants and waxes to the rubber to protect it from ozone, which would otherwise crack it. Over time these protectants work their way out to the surface, where ozone, heat and sunlight turn them brown. Old dressing, road film and brake dust then add to the dull layer.
Is tyre browning a problem?
Not for safety. It is the tyre's own protection at work, so browning is a cosmetic issue. It does matter for the finish, though: a dressing laid over browning looks patchy, and AutoBead and Deturner both say their dressings go on clean rubber.

- A stiff tyre brush kept only for tyres, so grit from the sidewall never reaches the paint.
- A tyre dressing and a foam applicator, if you want the sidewalls black again afterwards.

Tyre cleaners for browning
- Dodo Juice Pneu Look: a citrus-based cleaner for tyre sidewalls and exterior trim, made to remove old dressings, browning, oils and road grime before a dressing goes on. Spray, agitate, then rinse or wipe away before it dries. Test delicate trim first.
- Shiny Garage Pure Black: a fragrance-free concentrate diluted 1:1 to 1:5 by how dirty the tyre is, so 1 litre makes up to 5 litres. Apply to a cool, wet tyre out of direct sunlight, leave it about 60 seconds, scrub and rinse.

Tyre dressings for a clean black finish
- AutoBead Tyre Dressing: a gel-based, anti-sling sealant with high-quality silicone that AutoBead says dresses the rubber and protects it from UV rays and cracking. Apply it with a foam applicator to a clean tyre wall, keep it off the tread, and add a second layer if you want a higher-gloss wet look.
- Deturner Cream Tire Dressing: a solvent-free, water and SiO2 based cream with a satin finish, hydrophobic properties and no greasy residue. Deturner says to prepare the tyre with a tyre cleaner or APC first.
- Yum Dress V2: a water-based dressing with an adjustable satin to rich dark finish, used neat on tyres and trim.
- Dodo Juice Dark Matter: a water-resistant tyre and trim dressing with a dark satin finish. Buff off the excess after it settles to cut down sling.
- Alchemy Soul Glo 2000: a silicone oil gel that restores a deep black, at just 2 to 3 pea-sized drops per tyre on a foam applicator.

Step by step: cleaning browning off a tyre
- Work on one wheel at a time, with the tyre cool and out of direct sunlight.
- Rinse the tyre and wheel to remove loose dirt.
- Spray the tyre cleaner over the whole sidewall and leave it for the time on the label, without letting it dry.
- Scrub the sidewall firmly with a stiff tyre brush, working round the tyre.
- Rinse thoroughly. If the suds are still brown, repeat until they come off white.

Should you dress tyres after cleaning?
Only once the rubber is clean and completely dry. Apply a thin, even coat to the sidewall with a foam applicator, and wipe off any excess so it does not sling onto the paint. Keep dressing off the tread, brake discs and pedals. For a natural look choose a satin dressing, and for a wet look a gloss one.
Can you stop tyres going brown?
Not completely, because the protectants keep coming out of the rubber for the life of the tyre. Regular cleaning keeps it under control: a quick scrub with tyre cleaner at every wash stops browning and old dressing building up, so the sidewalls stay black and a dressing goes on evenly.
