What is the best alloy wheel cleaner in the UK?
For regular cleaning of painted, clear-coated or powder-coated alloys, choose a cleaner whose maker lists your finish, such as Koch-Chemie Magic Wheel Cleaner, which is acid-free at pH 5.5. For stubborn brake dust, a colour-change fallout remover such as Dodo Juice Ferrous Dueller dissolves the iron particles. Always work on cool wheels and never let the cleaner dry.
Acid, acid-free or pH neutral: which is safe on your wheels?
Most modern wheels are painted or clear coated, and an acid-free or pH-neutral cleaner is the everyday choice for them. These are the cleaners the makers describe as safe on the widest range of finishes.
Acid wheel cleaners vary. A strong acid works fast on heavy build-up but is a specialist tool rather than a weekly one. Some milder acidic cleaners are made for regular use: CarPro describes WheelX as acidic but more forgiving, with much less potential for corrosion, and safe on OEM, CarPro-coated, chrome and powder-coated wheels. It is not for bare aluminium.

Is wheel cleaner the same as fallout remover?
Not always. A general wheel cleaner loosens road grime and brake dust. A fallout remover reacts with the iron particles from brake discs, usually with a colour change, so they can be rinsed away rather than scrubbed. Some products do both: Dodo Juice Ferrous Dueller is a fallout remover and wheel cleaner, and CarPro says WheelX breaks down iron particles and road grime in one step. Which wheel cleaner for polished, chrome or bare metal wheels?
Choose a cleaner whose maker names your finish. Among the picks above, CarPro lists chrome wheels for WheelX and Koch-Chemie lists high-quality chrome wheels for Magic Wheel Cleaner, while CarPro keeps WheelX off bare aluminium. Keep acid cleaners away from bare, polished or anodised metal, and test a small area first on any refurbished or unusual finish.
How long should wheel cleaner dwell?
Only as long as the maker says. CarPro gives 1 to 2 minutes for WheelX, Koch-Chemie 2 to 5 minutes for Magic Wheel Cleaner and CarPro 5 to 7 minutes for TriX. Work on one wheel at a time, keep wheels cool and out of direct sunlight, and never let the cleaner dry on the wheel.
Do you need a wheel brush?
Usually, yes. The chemical loosens the dirt, and a soft wheel brush gets it out of spokes, barrels and around the wheel nuts. Keep your wheel brushes and wheel mitts separate from anything that touches the paint.
Should you clean the tyres at the same time?
Yes, while the wheel is wet and the brushes are out.
