We choose paint protection around the preparation and maintenance you can realistically give it. A spray sealant such as AutoBead Spray Sealant is a practical option for a daily driver; a wax such as ValetPro Indulgence Cream Wax suits you if you enjoy applying and renewing the finish. A ceramic coating needs more careful preparation and curing, but polishing first is only necessary when there are defects you want to improve.
What is the difference between wax, sealant and ceramic coating?
Waxes often combine carnauba or other waxes with synthetic ingredients; sealants use synthetic protective chemistry; ceramic coatings form a curing protective layer. Durability varies within each category. We would compare the specific application instructions and maintenance requirements instead of treating those three names as a guaranteed lifespan.

They are often sold as good, better and best, but sealant vs wax vs ceramic is really a choice between three commitments: of preparation, of maintenance and of how long the protection stays on the paint.
What does a car wax do?
It adds a layer of gloss and protection that sits on the paint and is renewed often. Traditionally carnauba based, a wax is prized for warmth and depth of gloss rather than longevity, and it is the most forgiving to apply: mistakes come off easily.
- Typical durability: weeks to a couple of months.
- Preparation: a clean, decontaminated surface is enough.
- Best for: people who enjoy the process and reapply regularly.
What is a paint sealant?
A sealant uses synthetic protective chemistry and is often straightforward to apply. We see it as a practical middle ground for a daily driver, particularly when you want easy maintenance without committing to a coating application. Its actual life depends on the product, preparation and use.

- Typical durability: several months.
- Preparation: clean and decontaminated, correction optional.
- Best for: daily driven cars kept outside.
What is a ceramic coating?
A curing layer, based on silica or similar chemistry, that bonds to prepared paint and hardens. A suitable coating can offer long service life, but water behaviour and durability depend on the particular product and its maintenance. Application and curing need more care than most waxes or spray sealants.
- Typical durability: a year or more, depending on the product and the preparation.
- Preparation: clean, decontaminated paint, corrected if you want to improve defects, then panel wiped as the coating instructions require, with time for the specified cure.
- Best for: someone willing to do the preparation properly, or to have it done.
The important point about coatings is that the result is decided before the bottle is opened. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, including swirl marks, and removing a badly applied one means machine work.

Which waxes and sealants do we stock?
These options cover straightforward wax application, spray protection and maintenance top-ups. We would choose by how you want to apply the product and look after the finish. The durability figures below are a guide, not a guarantee for every car.
Waxes
A liquid cream wax made with carnauba that spreads on and wipes off, which saves time over a traditional hard wax, for a high gloss finish with water beading and UV protection.
A non-abrasive liquid wax polish with carnauba and synthetic polymers. It can be used on its own or as the base for sealants and waxes, on classic and modern paint.
Our car wax guide compares liquid and cream waxes and gives the application steps for each.
Sealants
A blend of silicone polymers and silica resins rated at 9 months on paintwork and wheels. Spray it onto a microfibre, work it in straight lines on a clean, dry surface, leave it a minute to bond, then buff.
Stjarnagloss Parla Spray Sealant
A water-based nano sealant rated at 3 to 5 months. It can go on dry panels or wet ones straight after the wash, it can be layered, and it makes an excellent wheel sealant.
Ceramic coating
Each coating maker gives its own preparation steps, application temperatures and cure times. Ask the TDHQ team which coating suits your car and the time you have before you buy one.
Keeping it topped up
AutoBead Ceramic Quick Detailer
Nano ceramic particles and reactive polysiloxanes that add a layer of protection lasting about 6 months, on paint, glass, plastics, wheels and trim, used on a dry car or as a drying aid.
Our quick detailer guide compares more top-up sprays, including ones made for ceramic-coated cars.
Is a ceramic spray the same as a ceramic coating?
No. A label saying "ceramic" does not make it a coating.
Ceramic infused shampoos, SiO2 spray sealants and ceramic detailers are maintenance products. They can be useful for adding or topping up protection, but the word ceramic alone does not tell you the chemistry, cure requirements or expected life. Check the specific product instructions before treating a spray as equivalent to a dedicated coating. Sealants and coatings are not interchangeable terms, however loosely the industry uses them.
How do you maintain wax, sealant or a coating?
We recommend a compatible wash routine first, with top-ups only when they suit the protection system. Extra layers are optional, and they change the surface behaviour you see. Cleaning a contaminated coating may be more useful than covering it with another product.

Whichever you choose, maintenance is a pH-neutral shampoo and avoiding harsh traffic film removers on the protected surface. Our guide on how to wash your car safely covers the routine.
Common questions
Can I put wax on top of a sealant or ceramic coating?
Sometimes, if the underlying protection's instructions allow it. We would use the recommended maintenance product first. Wax or sealant can change the coating's slickness and water behaviour, so layering is a preference rather than an automatic improvement.
Which is best for a car kept outside all year?
We would consider an easy-to-renew sealant or a suitable coating, depending on your preparation space and maintenance routine. Both need clean, compatible paint. A coating can be applied without correction when you are happy with the existing finish; removing swirls is an appearance choice.
Do I need to polish the paint before a ceramic coating?
Yes, if the paint has swirls or scratches you want gone. A coating locks in what is underneath it. Our guide to compound vs polish explains how to correct the paint first.
Choosing honestly
Pick based on how much preparation time you genuinely have, not on the durability figure on the bottle. A well applied sealant on properly prepared paint usually gives a better result than a coating rushed onto a swirled car. If you want help deciding, ask the TDHQ team about your paint's condition and where the car is kept, or browse the full AutoBead range.
