To use AutoBead Surface Prep, wash, decontaminate and, if needed, polish the car first, make sure the panel is clean, dry and cool to the touch, spray it straight onto the surface and wipe it off with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. It strips old silicones, waxes and sealants, so the wax, sealant or ceramic coating you apply next bonds to bare paint or glass.

What is AutoBead's panel wipe for?

AutoBead Surface Prep is a multi-solvent panel wipe. AutoBead says it gives a measured and predictable flash off, so nothing is left behind on the paint. Its job is to remove existing silicones, waxes and sealants, so there is an optimal bond between the paint or glass and the new protection you put on it. AutoBead makes it an essential step before applying its own ceramic coatings.

When should you use a panel wipe?

Use one whenever the next layer needs to bond to bare paint or glass:

After machine polishing, a panel wipe clears the residue before protection.
  • Before a ceramic coating. A coating has to bond to the surface itself, which is why AutoBead calls Surface Prep essential before its coatings.
  • Before a hard wax or a sealant. AutoBead's own tip is that Surface Prep works great before its hard detailing waxes, stripping any existing protection so the new wax or sealant bonds to the bare paint.
  • After machine polishing. A wipe-down clears polish residue, so you see the true finish before you protect it.

You do not need it when you are simply topping up protection that is already on the car with a quick detailer or spray sealant, because a panel wipe would strip the layer you are trying to top up.

How do you use AutoBead Surface Prep?

Spray it onto a clean, dry, cool panel and wipe it off with a clean microfibre, after any polishing and just before the protection goes on. The full order is below.

  1. Wash and decontaminate: wash the car thoroughly, for example with AutoBead Snow Foam and AutoBead Pure Shampoo, and decontaminate the paint if it needs it.
  2. Polish if needed: correct the paint now. Surface Prep comes after polishing, just before the protection goes on.
  3. Check the surface: make sure it is clean, dry and cool to the touch, as AutoBead advises, and work in the shade.
  4. Spray: spray Surface Prep directly onto the surface, one panel at a time.
  5. Wipe off: use a clean, dry microfibre cloth, turning it to a fresh side as it picks up residue.
  6. Protect: apply your wax, sealant or coating to the prepared panels.

AutoBead adds one special-care note: because of the nature of the product, check any sensitive areas that may have had a SMART repair before you use it.

Common questions

Do you need a panel wipe before wax?

For a fresh, long-lasting layer, yes. AutoBead's tip is to use Surface Prep before its hard detailing waxes, because stripping the pre-existing protection gives an optimal bond between the bare paint and the wax or sealant you apply. If you are only adding another coat of the same wax a few weeks later, you can skip it.

Can you use a panel wipe on glass?

Yes. AutoBead describes Surface Prep as creating the bond between the paint or glass and the new protection, so it is the right step before a glass coating too. Use it the same way: clean, dry, cool glass, spray, then wipe off with a clean, dry microfibre.

Is AutoBead Surface Prep safe on a SMART repair?

Check first. Because of the nature of the product, AutoBead says to check any sensitive areas that may have had a SMART repair before you use it.
