Car shampoo does two jobs at the contact wash: it lifts the dirt a pre-wash left behind, and it lubricates the wash mitt so it glides instead of dragging. Some shampoos stop there, others add wax, ceramic or sealant, and a few are made to strip protection off. This guide explains which kind you need, and compares the car shampoos we stock using each maker's own figures.
What is the best car shampoo in the UK?
For regular washes, choose a pH-neutral shampoo that is safe on your protection, such as CarPro Reset. To top up a ceramic coating or wax as you wash, choose a ceramic shampoo such as AutoBead Ceramic Shampoo, which AutoBead says builds extra layers of protection with regular use. Always dose as the maker directs.
Pure shampoo or one with wax or ceramic?
A pure shampoo only cleans. CarPro makes Reset with no gloss enhancers, to break down dirt and traffic film so a coating keeps its water beading. Because nothing is added, it is easy to see whether a coating is still working.
A wash and protect shampoo cleans and leaves a thin layer behind. It is a quick way to keep water beading between full details, but it adds to what is on the paint rather than just cleaning it.
Neither is wrong. A sensible routine is a pure shampoo for most washes and a protecting shampoo every so often.

Ceramic-coated or waxed cars: wash and top up
- AutoBead Ceramic Shampoo: AutoBead says its ceramic molecules bond to the surface, so regular use builds up extra layers of ceramic protection and gloss. It is made to work with AutoBead's own waxes and coatings, and it also cleans and adds instant protection on unprotected paint. Use 3 to 4 capfuls in a 15 litre bucket of warm water.
- Sonax XTREME Ceramic Active Shampoo: a wash shampoo with Sonax's SI-Carbon sealing technology for ceramic-coated or sealed cars, leaving a water and dirt repellent finish.
Regular maintenance washes
- CarPro Reset: made as a partner to nanotechnology sealants and coatings. CarPro says it is pH-neutral in solution with the strength of an alkaline cleaner, and it has no gloss enhancers. Dilute 1:500, which is 40ml per 20 litres of water.
- Mosschem Luxe: a slick, pearlised shampoo that also adds gloss, used at just 10ml to 20ml per 20 litre bucket, and suitable for ceramic-coated cars.
- Sonax XTREME Shampoo 2-in-1: a shampoo with built-in drying support. Sonax says it cleans with special complexing agents, then its surfactants let the water run off so the car dries without wiping. Use 2 capfuls in 10 litres of warm water, and to help drying pour half a capful in 10 litres of cold water over the car from the roof down.
Special jobs
- Infinity Wax Wax Off: an alkaline strip shampoo that removes waxes, sealants and older ceramic coatings before fresh protection goes on. Infinity Wax gives 50ml to 100ml per half bucket for a decontamination wash, or 50ml to 100ml per litre in a sprayer to strip, and as little as 10ml to 20ml per 10 litre bucket for a gentle wash.
- CarPro Descale: an acidic shampoo for mineral deposits, hard water and the built-up dirt that dulls neglected paint and coatings. CarPro says it safely restores ceramic coating properties. Dilute 1:100 in a bucket or 1:10 in a foam sprayer, and let it dwell as long as possible without drying.

Which shampoo for a ceramic-coated car?
For most washes, a pH-neutral shampoo made for coatings, such as CarPro Reset. Every few washes, a ceramic shampoo such as AutoBead Ceramic Shampoo or Sonax XTREME Ceramic Active can top the coating up. If the coating stops beading because of mineral build-up, an acidic shampoo such as CarPro Descale is made for that job.
How much shampoo goes in a bucket?
Only what the label says. The doses above run from 10ml in a 20 litre bucket to 100ml in half a bucket, because every formula is different. Adding more rarely cleans better, it wastes product and can make the shampoo harder to rinse off, as our guide on how to wash your car safely explains.
Can you wash a car with washing-up liquid?
It is not a good substitute. Household detergents are made for a different cleaning task, and our wash guide covers why a proper car shampoo is the safer choice where wax and sealant are to be kept.
Does car shampoo work on matte paint and wraps?
Some do, but check the label first. A pure shampoo with no gloss enhancers, waxes or similar additives is the safer type, as long as its maker says it suits matte or satin paint and vinyl wraps. Avoid shampoos with wax, ceramic or gloss additives on matte finishes unless the maker says they suit them.
