What is the best car shampoo in the UK?
A good car shampoo does two jobs at the contact wash: it lifts the dirt a pre-wash left behind, and it lubricates the wash mitt so it glides instead of dragging. Some shampoos stop there, others add wax, ceramic or sealant, and a few are made to strip protection off, so the best shampoo for one car can be the wrong one for another.
We have grouped our car shampoos by the job they do, so you can choose between cleaning, adding protection and treating a specific problem. Measure the dose on the current label rather than borrowing a ratio from another shampoo.
Pure shampoo or one with wax or ceramic?
A pure shampoo only cleans. CarPro makes Reset with no gloss enhancers, to break down dirt and traffic film so a coating keeps its water beading. Because nothing is added, it is easy to see whether a coating is still working.
A wash and protect car shampoo, with wax or ceramic, cleans and leaves a thin layer behind. It is a quick way to keep water beading between full details, but it adds to what is on the paint rather than just cleaning it.
We would use a compatible pure shampoo as the starting point, especially when you want to assess an existing coating. A protecting shampoo is an optional addition when its finish suits your car; it is not a required step in every maintenance routine.

Ceramic-coated or waxed cars: wash and top up
A wash-and-protect formula designed to add gloss and water-repellent protection. It is intended to complement AutoBead's protection range and can also be used on suitable unprotected paint. We would not add it automatically to a coating routine that specifies an additive-free shampoo. Use 3 to 4 capfuls in a 15 litre bucket of warm water.
Sonax XTREME Ceramic Active Shampoo
A wash shampoo with Sonax's SI-Carbon sealing technology for ceramic-coated or sealed cars, leaving a water and dirt repellent finish.
Regular maintenance washes
For most washes, we would choose a compatible cleaning shampoo. Pure describes the absence of added protection or gloss ingredients; pH-neutral describes acidity, so the two terms are not interchangeable.
Made as a partner to nanotechnology sealants and coatings. It is pH-neutral in solution with the strength of an alkaline cleaner, and it has no gloss enhancers. Dilute 1:500, which is 40ml per 20 litres of water.
A slick, pearlised shampoo that also adds gloss, used at just 10ml to 20ml per 20 litre bucket, and suitable for ceramic-coated cars.
A shampoo with built-in drying support. Its drying-support formula is intended to help water run off after rinsing. We would still assess the finish and local water conditions rather than assume air-drying cannot leave mineral spots. Use 2 capfuls in 10 litres of warm water, and to help drying pour half a capful in 10 litres of cold water over the car from the roof down.
Special jobs
An alkaline shampoo intended for stripping or decontamination work. Do not assume a wash has completely removed a cured coating; preparation for new protection must follow that product's requirements. Use 50ml to 100ml per half bucket for a decontamination wash, or 50ml to 100ml per litre in a sprayer to strip, and as little as 10ml to 20ml per 10 litre bucket for a gentle wash.
An acidic shampoo for mineral deposits, hard water and the built-up dirt that dulls neglected paint and coatings. It safely restores ceramic coating properties. Dilute 1:100 in a bucket or 1:10 in a foam sprayer, and let it dwell as long as possible without drying.

How do you use car shampoo?
After the pre-wash and rinse, wash from the top down with a clean mitt and correctly diluted shampoo, rinsing the mitt between panels. Our guide on how to wash your car safely covers every stage, and the best snow foam guide covers the pre-wash.
- Dose the bucket: add the shampoo at the maker's dilution, such as 3 to 4 capfuls of AutoBead Ceramic Shampoo in a 15 litre bucket of warm water.
- Fill a rinse bucket: use clean water for rinsing the mitt between panels.
- Wash from the top down: work panel by panel with straight passes and light pressure.
- Rinse the mitt often: clean it in the rinse bucket before it goes back into the shampoo.
- Rinse the car: take off all the shampoo before it can dry.

Which shampoo for a ceramic-coated car?
For a coated car, we start with the coating manufacturer's maintenance instructions. A compatible pure shampoo is often the useful routine choice because it cleans without covering the coating's behaviour with another layer. Use a topper only when appropriate. Reduced beading may reflect contamination rather than coating failure; address traffic film or mineral deposits with an approved cleaner before assuming more protection is needed. Common questions
How much shampoo goes in a bucket?
Only what the label says. The doses above run from 10ml in a 20 litre bucket to 100ml in half a bucket, because every formula is different. Adding more rarely cleans better, it wastes product and can make the shampoo harder to rinse off.
Can you wash a car with washing-up liquid?
It is not a good substitute. Household detergents are made for a different cleaning task, and our wash guide covers why a proper car shampoo is the safer choice where wax and sealant are to be kept.
Does car shampoo work on matte paint and wraps?
Some do, but check the label first. A pure shampoo with no gloss enhancers, waxes or similar additives is the safer type, as long as it is made for matte or satin paint and vinyl wraps. Avoid shampoos with wax, ceramic or gloss additives on matte finishes unless they are made for them.
Is a pH neutral car wash safe on wax and coatings?
Generally yes: Reset is pH-neutral in solution and made as a partner to nanotechnology sealants and coatings. Stronger shampoos such as the alkaline Wax Off and the acidic Descale are for special jobs, not every wash.
