Snow foam is the pre-wash stage that loosens dirt before a wash mitt touches the paint. There is no single best snow foam for every car. The right one depends on what protection is already on the paint and how dirty the car is. This guide explains how to choose, and compares the snow foams we stock using each maker's own figures.
What is the best snow foam in the UK?
For regular washes on a car with wax, sealant, a ceramic coating, PPF or a wrap, choose a pH-neutral snow foam such as Stjarnagloss SNÖ or Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam. For heavy winter grime, an alkaline foam such as Dodo Juice iFoam Max cleans harder, but keep it off sealed or waxed paint. Never let the foam dry.
pH-neutral or alkaline: which do you need?
A pH-neutral snow foam is the everyday choice. It loosens dirt without working against the wax, sealant or coating already on the car, so it suits vehicles that are washed often.
An alkaline snow foam cleans harder. It is the better tool for traffic film, winter grime and cars that have gone a while between washes, but the stronger chemistry is not what you want on a protected car every week.
The makers draw the same line. Dodo Juice makes both kinds: Apple iFoam is its pH-neutral maintenance foam, safe on wax, sealant, matt and gloss finishes, while iFoam Max is an aggressive alkaline traffic film remover foam that is not for sealed, waxed or delicate finishes.

Regular washes on protected paint
- Stjarnagloss SNÖ: a pH-neutral, double-strength concentrate that Stjarnagloss lists as safe on ceramic coatings, waxes, sealants, paint protection film and vinyl wraps, including matte and satin finishes. Best for light to moderate dirt.
- Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam: a high-foaming, pH-neutral foam with a cherry fragrance that does not attack waxed or sealed surfaces. It also works as a shampoo for a hand wash.
- Dodo Juice Apple iFoam: a pH-neutral maintenance foam, safe on wax, sealant, matt and gloss finishes. Dodo Juice describes it as stronger than some alkaline foams.
- Yum Foam: pH 7 and safe on waxes, sealants and ceramic coatings. Yum Cars gives 100ml to 150ml per foam bottle and 5 to 10 minutes of dwell.
Heavy grime and winter washes
- Dodo Juice iFoam Max: an aggressive alkaline traffic film remover foam for maximum contactless cleaning. Keep it off sealed, waxed or delicate finishes and rinse thoroughly.
- Mosschem Citrus Wash: a citrus pre-wash sprayed onto road grime, traffic film and bug residue before the foam goes on. Mosschem gives 100:1 for light cleaning, 50:1 for general cleaning and 30:1 for heavy grime, from a trigger, pump or foam sprayer, with up to 5 minutes of dwell on cool panels.
Concentrates that go further
- Mosschem Megafoam Ultimate: a highly concentrated, high-cling foam used at up to 50:1. Mosschem suggests 50ml per foam lance bottle for a light wash, 100ml for standard cleaning and 150ml to 200ml for heavy dirt, with 3 to 5 minutes of dwell.
- VP-UK Snow Foam: a thick pre-wash foam at 100ml to 150ml per 1 litre cannon. VP-UK notes that lower-pressure machines may need a stronger mix.

How much snow foam goes in a foam lance?
It depends on the product, so follow the label. The makers above give between 50ml and 200ml of concentrate in a 1 litre foam bottle, topped up with water. Use more for a dirty car or a lower-powered pressure washer, and less for a light maintenance wash.
Will snow foam strip wax or a ceramic coating?
A pH-neutral foam used as directed should not. Stjarnagloss, Koch-Chemie, Dodo Juice and Yum Cars all state that their neutral foams are safe on existing protection. Strong alkaline foams are different: Dodo Juice keeps iFoam Max off sealed, waxed and delicate finishes.
Is thicker foam better?
Not necessarily. Thick foam clings for longer, which gives the chemistry more time to work, but the cleaning comes from the formula, not the thickness. Our guide on how to wash your car safely covers this in more detail.
Do you need a pressure washer for snow foam?
For a proper foam blanket, yes. Most snow foams are made for a snow foam lance on a pressure washer. Some, such as Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam, can also be used in a foam sprayer. How long should snow foam dwell?
Usually a few minutes. Mosschem gives 3 to 5 minutes for Megafoam and Yum Cars 5 to 10 minutes for Yum Foam. Whatever the product, never let snow foam dry on the car, and work out of direct sunlight.
