Pressure washers are not standardised, so a new snow foam lance or trigger gun only fits if its fitting matches your exact machine. Work out which join you are connecting, identify the fitting, then match it or bridge it with an adapter such as the Better Detailing M22 to 3/8 inch quick release adapter. "Universal" on a listing usually means "supplied with adapters".
What pressure washer fitting do I need?
It depends on the exact machine model and which join you are connecting: machine to hose, hose to gun, or gun to lance. For a snow foam lance it is the gun to lance join, usually a bayonet, a quick release, a screw thread or the maker's own clip.
Match that fitting, or bridge it with the right adapter. The model number matters more than the brand name, so have it to hand before you order anything.
Which connection points matter on a pressure washer?
Three separate joins, and they are often different from each other on the same machine. Check each one you plan to change.
- Machine to hose: where the high pressure hose leaves the unit.
- Hose to trigger gun: the join at the handle, often an M22 screw thread.
- Gun to lance or accessory: where a snow foam lance, wand or brush attaches.
A snow foam lance almost always attaches at point three, so that is the fitting you need to identify.
What are the pressure washer connector types?
Pressure washer hose connector types and gun to lance fittings come in four main kinds: bayonet, quick release, screw thread and the maker's own clip. Many hoses and guns use an M22 screw thread, while lances and accessories more often use a bayonet or a quick release.
- Bayonet: push and twist to lock. Common on many domestic machines.
- Quick release: a sprung collar you pull back. Widely used on enthusiast and professional machines, in more than one size, with 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch the usual two.
- Screw thread: threads directly into the gun or hose, typical of some trade machines. M22 is a 22mm thread.
- The maker's own clip: several manufacturers use their own click-fit design that nothing else matches without an adapter.

Does the same brand mean the same fitting?
No. Manufacturers change fittings across model generations and between their domestic and professional ranges, so a fitting that suits one model often will not suit the next one up.
That is why the lance adapters below name the machines and connection types they suit, and why the model number matters more than the brand name.
Does flow rate matter for a snow foam lance?
Yes. A snow foam lance needs enough flow to draw and aerate the mixture properly, so fit is only half of it.

Snow foam lance adapters

How do you fit a snow foam lance adapter?
Unscrew the fitting already on the lance and screw the new adapter in its place. The listings for the Better Detailing adapters give the same method.
- Isolate the machine: switch off, disconnect the power and water and release any pressure left in the system.
- Remove the old fitting: unscrew the quick release or machine adapter from the top of the lance.
- Check the thread: make sure the thread and seals are clean and undamaged.
- Seal it: add PTFE plumber's tape to the thread where required, without overdoing it.
- Fit the adapter: screw it in and tighten it securely without overtightening.
- Test for leaks: connect the lance, run the machine and check the join before normal use.
Are pressure washer adapters a good idea?
Yes, within limits. Adapters solve most mismatches, and there is nothing wrong with using one.
Keep two things in mind: every extra join is a potential leak point, and adapters do not change flow rate. An adapter will make a lance attach, but it will not make an underpowered machine foam well.
What should you check before ordering?
Four things, so the part fits first time:
- The exact machine make and model number.
- Which of the three joins you are trying to connect.
- The machine's flow rate in litres per minute, if it is listed.
- Whether the original gun is still fitted, or has already been replaced.
Common questions
Will a snow foam lance fit any pressure washer?
Only with the right fitting. Most aftermarket lances take a swappable fitting at the top, so the lance itself can suit many machines once the matching adapter is screwed in.
What is an M22 fitting?
M22 is a 22mm screw thread used on many pressure washer hoses and guns. Adapters such as the M22 to 3/8 inch quick release above let an M22 connection take quick release accessories.
Why does my snow foam come out thin and watery?
Usually the lance does not suit the machine's flow rate, or the mix is too weak. Check the machine's litres per minute, then the dilution on the snow foam label.
