Best Pressure Washer for Car Detailing UK: Flow, Pressure and Fittings

How to choose a pressure washer for car detailing, the Kiam DTLR and Active machines we stock compared by flow, pressure and pump, and the gun, foam and bucket that finish the setup.

Best pressure washer for car detailing: the Active 2.3 electric pressure washer with its hose and trigger gun on The Drivers HQ display plinth

The best pressure washer for car detailing balances pressure with flow, because flow rinses the car and feeds the snow foam cannon. As a car detailing pressure washer, the Kiam DTLR 2 Pro gives 160 bar and 10 litres per minute, and the Active 2.3 is built around detailing with a 5-piston brass pump.

What makes a pressure washer good for car detailing?

Flow matters as much as pressure. A higher flow rate rinses foam and dirt off faster and makes a foam cannon work properly, while very high pressure adds little on paint and can lift loose trim. Good fittings matter too, because every lance, cannon and nozzle you add connects through them. Many UK drivers call it a jet wash; it is the same machine.

  • Flow rate: litres per minute (or gallons per minute on US machines) is what moves dirt off the panel and makes thick foam.
  • Working pressure: the pressure the machine runs at in use, which is lower than the maximum figure on the box.
  • Pump and motor: the detailing machines below use induction motors and brass pumps, which their makers build for regular, longer use.
  • Quick release fittings: a standard quick release system lets you swap the gun, lance, foam cannon and nozzles in seconds.
  • Hose length: a long hose lets the machine stay in one place while you walk round the car.

How do the machines compare?

The table sets out each maker's own figures side by side, so you can match the machine to how and where you wash.

Machine Best for Pressure and flow Motor and pump
Kiam DTLR 2 Pro Fixed detailing bays and heavy regular use 160 bar max, 10 litres per minute 3.0kW induction motor, 15 m hose
Kiam DTLR 2 Lite Home and mobile detailing, ready to use from the box 150 bar max, 114 bar working, 8.45 litres per minute 2500W motor, snow foam cannon included

How do you wash a car with a pressure washer?

Work from the top down, keep the lance moving and stand back from the paint. The pressure washer does the rinsing and foaming; the contact wash is still done by hand with a clean mitt.

  1. Rinse: rinse the whole car from the top down to take off loose dirt and grit.
  2. Foam: cover the car in snow foam from the bottom up, so the lower panels get the longest dwell.
  3. Dwell: leave the foam to work for the time on its label, out of direct sun, and never let it dry.
  4. Rinse again: rinse the foam off from the top down, working into the gaps and the wheel arches.
  5. Contact wash: wash by hand with a clean mitt and a grit guard bucket, one panel at a time.
  6. Final rinse and dry: rinse once more and dry straight away with a clean drying towel.

Common questions

Is more bar always better for washing a car?

No. Paint and trim need a sensible pressure used from a safe distance, and the flow rate does more of the work in rinsing and foaming. Compare litres per minute as well as the bar figure when you choose a machine.

Do these machines work with a snow foam cannon?

Yes. The DTLR 2 Lite comes with a snow foam cannon, the DTLR 2 Pro uses quick release fittings throughout, and both Active machines have quick-connect fittings that take foam cannons and snow foam lances.

Will my old lance and accessories fit?

It depends on the fittings. Many detailing accessories use standard quick release connectors, and adapters cover most other machines. Our guide to pressure washer fittings explains what connects to what.

Which is the best professional car pressure washer?

From our range, the Kiam DTLR 2 Pro. Kiam builds it for serious enthusiasts, detailing studios and commercial users, with 160 bar, 10 litres per minute, a 3.0kW induction motor and a 15 metre hose. The Active 2.3 is the high-flow alternative, with a 5-piston brass pump and 2.3 GPM.

Is a jet wash the same as a pressure washer for car detailing?

Yes. Jet wash is the everyday UK name for a pressure washer. For car detailing, look for good flow and quick release fittings rather than the highest bar figure, whatever the machine is called.

Where can I see these pressure washers in person?

Visit our shop at 1a Shipley Court, Ilkeston DE7 8EF, or order online for delivery across the UK. Ask the team before you visit if you want to see a particular machine running.
