How to Wash a Matte Car or Wrap Without Ruining the Finish

How to wash matte paint and matte wraps safely: which shampoos and detailers have no gloss enhancers, the step-by-step method, drying, and what to avoid.

How to wash a matte car: AutoBead Pure Shampoo, Stjarnagloss Mörk and Crankalicious Carboniferous Matt Detailer on The Drivers HQ display plinth

To wash a matte car or a matte wrap, use only products with no gloss enhancers, waxes or fillers, such as AutoBead Pure Shampoo and a pH-neutral pre-wash, with a soft mitt, two buckets and gentle straight-line passes. Blot it dry and use a matte detailer such as Stjarnagloss Mörk between washes. Never polish, clay or wax a matte finish.

Why does matte paint need different care?

A matte or satin finish looks flat because its surface scatters light instead of reflecting it. Anything that fills or smooths that surface makes it shinier: waxes, gloss enhancers, polishes and abrasive scrubbing all do it, and on a matte finish the change can be permanent or patchy. That is why the products are the main difference, not the method. The washing technique is the same careful routine you would use on any good paint, only gentler.

How do you wash a matte car step by step?

Pre-wash, wash gently with a pure shampoo and two buckets, rinse well and blot dry. Every product in the routine must be free of gloss enhancers and waxes.

  1. Find shade: work on a cool panel, so nothing dries on and leaves marks.
  2. Rinse and pre-wash: rinse off loose dirt, then use a pH-neutral snow foam such as Stjarnagloss SNÖ, which its listing says is safe for vinyl wraps, waxes, sealants, ceramic coatings and PPF. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Two buckets and a pure shampoo: add 7 to 10ml of AutoBead Pure Shampoo to a 15 litre bucket of warm water, as AutoBead directs, with a second bucket of clean rinse water.
  4. Wash gently from the top down: use a soft mitt such as the FibreKing Gold Label Korean Microfibre Wash Mitt, light pressure and straight lines, and rinse the mitt often. Do not scrub one spot.
  5. Rinse well: make sure no shampoo is left to dry.
  6. Blot dry: lay a soft drying towel such as the FibreKing Silver Label Drying Towel on the panel and lift it off, or draw it across gently, rather than rubbing.
  7. Finish with a matte detailer: take off any water marks or fingerprints without adding gloss.

Common questions

What should you never use on a matte finish?

Anything that adds gloss or removes material. That means waxes, glazes, gloss-enhancing shampoos and quick detailers, polishes and compounds, clay bars, and stiff brushes on the paint. Wash-and-wax shampoos and standard quick detailers are made to add shine, which is the opposite of what a matte finish needs. If a matte panel is damaged, polishing it will not help, because it makes that area shiny.

Can you take a matte car through a car wash?

Avoid brush car washes. The brushes, and any wax or gloss programme in an automatic wash, can mark a matte finish and leave it patchy. A hand wash with matte-safe products is the safe option; if you are away from home, a touch-free jet wash with plain water is less risky than brushes.

Are matte cars hard to clean?

Not harder, just less forgiving. The washing itself is the same two-bucket routine, but you cannot polish out a mistake, so the care goes into the product choice and a light touch. Deal with bird droppings and bug splatter quickly, before they can mark the surface, and keep a matte detailer and a clean microfibre to hand.
