To protect your car in a UK winter, wash it and seal the paint and wheels with a durable sealant such as AutoBead Spray Sealant before the gritters come out. Then rinse off road salt often, pre-wash with AutoBead Heavy Dirt before you touch the paint, and top up the protection as you go. Clean glass and a frost-protected screen wash matter too.

Why is winter so hard on a car?

Road salt and grit, constant wet, brake dust and traffic film all build up faster from October to March, and the low winter sun shows every smear on the glass. Salt left on the car keeps working on any chip or bare metal, grit turns every careless wash into a scratching session, and dirt bakes onto wheels that never get a chance to dry. Protection you put on in autumn makes all of it easier to wash off.

How do you protect car paint before winter?

Start from clean, decontaminated paint, wipe it down, seal it and top the protection up through the season. AutoBead's own products cover each step below.

  1. Wash and decontaminate: start from clean, bare paint so the protection bonds properly. See how to wash your car safely.
  2. Panel wipe: AutoBead Surface Prep is a panel wipe that AutoBead says removes old silicones, waxes and sealants so the new layer bonds to the paint.
  3. Seal the paint: AutoBead Spray Sealant is a blend of silicone polymers and silica resins that AutoBead rates for a durability of 9 months, which covers a whole winter. Spray it onto a microfibre applicator, work it in straight lines, let it bond for 1 minute and buff off with a short pile microfibre. AutoBead says it suits wheels as well as paintwork.
  4. Top up through the season: AutoBead Ceramic Quick Detailer adds a layer of ceramic protection that AutoBead rates at approximately 6 months, and it can be used as a drying aid after a wash, which makes topping up quick on cold days.

How do you protect alloy wheels in winter?

Seal them while they are clean. Dodo Juice Wheeler Sealer is a heat-resistant nano sealant made for wheels, which Dodo Juice says has excellent chemical resistance against brake dust and road grime and lasts 2 to 4 months or more. Its method: clean the wheel thoroughly, wipe it with a panel wipe, spray on the sealer, let it cure for a few minutes, buff it level with a soft cloth and apply a second coat. Keep it off the brake discs. Dodo Juice points out that sealed wheels still get dirty, but the dirt comes off much more easily.

How do you wash road salt off a car?

Rinse first and let a pre-wash do the heavy lifting, so you never rub salt and grit into the paint with a mitt. AutoBead Heavy Dirt is a highly concentrated citrus pre-wash that AutoBead dilutes 10:1 for heavy soiling and 25:1 for everyday use, with 3 to 4 minutes of dwell time before a thorough rinse, and AutoBead says it is wax and sealant safe at the correct ratios. Then wash as normal, paying extra attention to the sills, lower doors and wheel arches, where salt collects. Our guide to the best citrus pre-wash covers the alternatives.

No hose, or a hosepipe ban? Infinity Wax Zero Water can handle winter dirt and salt, but Infinity Wax recommends its rinseless bucket method only for that, with the product pre-sprayed onto the panel first.

How do you protect a convertible soft top in winter?

Dodo Juice Fabricadabra is a nano fabric sealant that Dodo Juice says creates a water-repellent, dirt-resistant barrier that stays breathable and lasts 6 months or more. Wash and rinse the roof first, apply it as a spray or with a brush a panel at a time up to the stitch lines, let it dry and add more coats for more water repellence. Dodo Juice recommends keeping the roof dry for 24 hours afterwards, so do it in a garage or a dry spell before winter sets in.

Common questions

How often should you wash your car in winter?

Whenever the roads have been gritted and the car is visibly coated, and at least every week or two through the salty months. A rinse of the arches, sills and lower panels between full washes helps too. Avoid washing in freezing temperatures, when water can freeze in door seals, locks and on the road beside the car, and dry door shuts and seals before you close up.

How do you keep the glass clear in winter?

Keep it clean inside and out, because a film on the inside of the windscreen is what turns low winter sun into glare and helps the glass mist up. Use a screen wash with frost protection in the washer bottle through winter: summer screen wash concentrates are not made for freezing temperatures. Our guide on how to clean car windows without streaks covers the method.

Should you wax or seal a car before winter?

Seal it. A sealant such as AutoBead Spray Sealant, which AutoBead rates for 9 months, covers a whole winter, and a ceramic quick detailer tops it up through the season.
