Why Is My Windscreen Smearing? Causes and How to Stop It

The common causes of a smearing windscreen, from road film and wax on the glass to worn wiper blades and weak screen wash, and the step-by-step fix for each one.

A windscreen usually smears because of an oily film on the glass, dirty or worn wiper blades, or weak screen wash. Clean the glass with a solvent-based cleaner such as Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol, wipe the wiper rubbers and fill the bottle with a proper screen wash such as Sonax XTREME Clear View. If it carries on, replace the blades.

What causes a windscreen to smear?

Usually an oily film on the glass, dirty or worn wiper rubbers or the wrong washer fluid, and sometimes more than one at once. The common causes are below.

An oily film on the glass is the most common cause of smearing.
  • A film on the glass. Road grime, exhaust soot, tree sap and oily spray from the road build up into a greasy layer that the wipers spread around instead of clearing. Sonax lists smeary oil, grime and silicone films among the things its screen wash concentrate is made to remove.
  • Wax or dressing on the screen. Spray wax, sealant, detail spray or tyre and trim dressing that drifts onto the glass leaves an oily layer that smears as soon as the wipers run.
  • Dirty wiper rubbers. The edge of the blade picks up grit and grime and lays it back down as a line or a haze.
  • Worn wiper blades. Split, hardened or rounded rubber cannot wipe the glass dry, so it leaves streaks and arcs.
  • Water or weak screen wash. Water alone cannot cut through road film, and in hard water areas it can leave its own marks as it dries.
  • A worn rain repellent. A repellent coating that has worn off in patches gives the wipers an uneven surface, which can show as smearing or judder.

How do you stop a windscreen smearing step by step?

Clean the blades and both sides of the glass, use a proper screen wash and test. If the wipers still leave lines in the same place, the blades are worn.

  1. Lift the wipers and clean the rubbers: wipe each blade edge with a microfibre cloth dampened with glass cleaner until no more black comes off. Check the rubber for splits or tears while you are there.
  2. Deep clean the outside of the screen: use a solvent-based glass cleaner and a clean glass cloth, working across the whole screen, including the area under the parked wipers. Buff dry with a second cloth.
  3. Clean the inside too: a haze on the inside of the glass looks like smearing in low sun or oncoming headlights, even when the outside is clean.
  4. Fill the washer bottle with proper screen wash: mix it at the maker's dilution for the season; never run on plain water.
  5. Test it: run the washers and wipers on the clean screen. If they still leave lines in the same place, the blade is worn.
  6. Replace worn blades: a new pair of blades on clean glass is the only fix for split or hardened rubber.

Why do my wipers smear after washing the car?

Usually because something from the wash ended up on the glass. Spray waxes, sealants, drying aids and detail sprays are made to bond to paint, and on a windscreen they leave a slick, oily layer that the wipers smear across your view. Apply protection to the paint only, keep the glass for glass products, and clean the screen last with a dedicated glass cleaner. If a car wash has left a film, a solvent-based glass cleaner or a screen wash made to remove silicone films is the way to shift it.

Common questions

Does screen wash stop smearing?

A good screen wash stops a lot of it, because it cleans the film off the glass every time you use the washers, which water cannot do. Use it at the dilution the maker gives for the season: Sonax XTREME Clear View is a summer concentrate that Sonax says must be protected against frost, while Dodo Juice uses Spirited Away neat for the coldest weather. Dodo Juice also notes that some car manufacturers prohibit third-party screen wash products, in case incompatibilities clog the washer jet filters, so check your handbook first.

Can a rain repellent cause smearing?

A fresh, evenly applied repellent helps the wipers, but one that has worn off in patches can make them judder and smear. Clean the screen thoroughly first, then top the repellency up across the whole screen so the surface is even again. CarPro's method for Clarify PHOBIC is to spray 2 to 3 times on a 20 by 20 cm section of glass, or once on coated glass, spread it evenly with a short pile microfibre cloth, then flip the cloth and wipe until the glass is streak-free. Its original Clarify cleans without damaging a hydrophobic glass coating, so it suits coated screens between top-ups.

When should you replace your wiper blades?

Replace them when the rubber is split, torn, hardened or no longer sits flat on the glass, or when they still leave lines after you have cleaned both the blades and the screen. Cleaning cannot repair a worn edge. Fit the new blades to a freshly cleaned screen so they start on a smooth, film-free surface.
