To use an iron fallout remover such as Dodo Juice Ferrous Dueller or CarPro IronX LS, wash the car, spray the remover onto cool paint or wheels out of direct sunlight, leave it while it turns purple, and rinse it off before it can dry. Clay only where the paint still feels rough.
What does an iron fallout remover do?
It dissolves tiny iron particles that are stuck in the paint and wheels. Dodo Juice describes fallout as small iron particles from brake discs that land on car paintwork and get rubbed deeper with every wash. CarPro explains that its IronX breaks down ferrous contamination from brakes, rail travel and construction by forming a water-soluble complex with the iron, so it rinses away and cleans deeper than washing or claying alone. The purple colour is the chemistry at work: the remover changes colour as it reacts with iron, so you can see where the contamination was.
How do you use an iron fallout remover step by step?
Wash, spray onto a cool surface, let the colour change happen and rinse thoroughly. The steps follow CarPro's and Dodo Juice's own instructions.
- Wash the car first: CarPro's instructions for IronX start with washing the surface, so the remover works on the bonded iron rather than loose dirt.
- Cool panels, out of the sun: Dodo Juice says to make sure the surface is cool and out of direct sunlight, and CarPro says to avoid drying in direct sunlight.
- Spray it on: shake the bottle and spray an even coat over the paint, glass or wheels.
- Let it dwell: CarPro waits 3 to 5 minutes while the contaminants turn purple-red; Dodo Juice dwells until the purple colour change is complete, usually a few minutes, and never lets it dry on.
- Agitate if needed: CarPro rubs IronX in with a damp soft sponge; on wheels with heavier contamination, Dodo Juice works the area with a wheel brush.
- Rinse thoroughly: use plenty of water once the reaction has finished.
- Clay if it still feels rough: Dodo Juice suggests following up with a clay bar if necessary for the remaining contaminants.

Which iron fallout remover should you use?
Every product below is in stock with us, and the details come from each maker's own website or the product listing.
A full-strength, pH-neutral iron fallout remover and wheel cleaner with a lower-odour active ingredient and an improved cling formula for longer dwell time. Dodo Juice says it works on both paintwork decontamination and wheel cleaning, and reduces the clay bar workload by removing iron first.
The lemon-scented version of IronX, the acid-free, pH-balanced iron remover. CarPro says IronX can be used on paint, plastic, chrome, glass and alloy wheels.
IronX's iron-removing power combined with a cleaning surfactant. CarPro uses it undiluted through a foam lance or diluted 1:8 with a mitt or in a bucket, as an iron-removing snow foam, shampoo, clay lubricant or maintenance wheel cleaner, and says it is safe on all CQUARTZ and DQUARTZ coatings.
Better Detailing Chemical Resistant Brush
Stiff synthetic bristles on a chemical-resistant handle, built for repeated use with strong wheel cleaners on faces, spokes and nut recesses.
FibreKing Premium Microfibre Cloths
For drying the panel afterwards; they work wet or dry.

Common questions
Do you use iron remover before or after washing?
After a wash, on clean paint. Washing first takes off the loose dirt so the remover can reach the iron bonded in the surface, which is why CarPro's instructions begin with washing. The usual order in a full detail is wash, iron remover, then clay if needed, then polish and protect; our guide to the correct order to detail a car sets out every stage.
How often should you use an iron fallout remover?
Not every wash. Iron builds up slowly, so a decontamination every few months, or before you polish or apply new protection, is enough for most cars. Wheels collect brake dust much faster, so a pH-neutral iron-removing wheel cleaner such as Ferrous Dueller can be part of your regular wheel routine. If you want gentle iron removal at every wash, an iron-removing snow foam such as IronX Snow Soap does it as part of the pre-wash.
Is iron fallout remover safe on car paint?
Used as directed, yes: both makers above make pH-neutral or pH-balanced, acid-free formulas for use on paint, and CarPro says IronX Snow Soap is safe on its CQUARTZ and DQUARTZ coatings. The rules are the same for every brand: cool panels, out of direct sun, never let it dry, and rinse thoroughly. Dodo Juice also advises checking an inconspicuous area first, especially on wheels with a poor finish.

Why does iron remover smell so bad?
Because the active ingredient that causes the purple reaction has a natural odour. Dodo Juice says it has minimised it in Ferrous Dueller with a lower-odour ingredient, and CarPro makes IronX LS with a lemon scent. Work outside or with the garage door open.
An iron remover will not shift tar spots, which need a dedicated tar and glue remover. For wheel cleaners, see the best alloy wheel cleaner guide.
