To remove a sticker from a car without damaging the paint, warm it with a hairdryer to soften the glue, peel it back slowly at a low angle, then dissolve what is left with an adhesive remover such as Sonax PROFILINE Stain Ex. For big decals, a Toffee Wheel Adhesive and Decal Remover on a drill lifts vinyl and residue. Wash and re-protect the area afterwards.

How do you remove a sticker from car paint step by step?

Warm it, peel it slowly, dissolve the glue that is left and re-protect the panel. Heat softens the adhesive so it lets go cleanly, and the method follows Sonax's own instructions.

  1. Wash the area: grit trapped under your fingers or a scraper will scratch the paint.
  2. Warm it: Sonax's method for films and stickers is to heat them with a hairdryer first and then peel them off carefully. Warm, soft glue lets go far more cleanly than cold glue.
  3. Peel slowly: lift a corner with a fingernail or plastic card and pull the sticker back on itself at a low angle, warming it again as you go.
  4. Lift the residue: if needed, Sonax uses a plastic card or soft spatula to gently scrape off adhesive residue, taking care not to damage the surface. Never use a metal blade on paint.
  5. Dissolve what is left: apply an adhesive remover such as Sonax PROFILINE Stain Ex, leave it for a short exposure time and wipe with a soft cloth, repeating if necessary, as Sonax directs.
  6. Wash and protect: wash the panel to remove any solvent, dry it and re-apply wax or sealant, because adhesive removers strip protection.

What removes sticker residue from a car?

A solvent-based adhesive remover for the glue, and friction for thick vinyl. Every product below is in stock with us, and the details come from the maker's own website or the product listing.

  • Sonax PROFILINE Stain Ex

A hydrocarbon-based cleaner that Sonax says removes adhesive residue, spray adhesive, paint overspray, silicone, tar and waxes and dries without leaving residues. Sonax limits it to resistant surfaces such as glass, metal, PVC and cured paintwork, and says to test it on an inconspicuous area first, keep it off hot surfaces, single-layer paint without clear coat and acrylic glass, and use it with good ventilation.

What is a toffee wheel?

A toffee wheel is a rubber eraser wheel that fits a drill and removes vinyl decals, stickers, badges and adhesive residue by friction rather than abrasion. Our Toffee Wheel comes with its drill arbor, fits most corded and cordless drills and runs at 1500 to 2500 rpm at most.

Light, even pressure and keep it moving: friction makes heat.
  • Toffee Wheel Adhesive and Decal Remover

Our rubber eraser wheel for a drill, for old vinyl decals, stickers, badges and adhesive residue on painted surfaces. Its listing says it works by friction, not abrasion, at no more than 1500 to 2500 rpm with light, even pressure, and that friction makes heat, so keep it moving and never hold it on one spot. It is not for plastic bumpers, unpainted plastics or delicate finishes.

Common questions

How do you remove old, cracked vinyl decals?

Old vinyl that has baked in the sun often breaks into tiny pieces instead of peeling. Warm it well and peel what you can, then use a decal eraser wheel such as the Toffee Wheel on a drill to lift the rest with friction, keeping the speed within its 1500 to 2500 rpm limit and the wheel moving. Finish the glue with an adhesive remover and a soft cloth.

Give the remover a short exposure time, then wipe with a soft cloth.

Why can you still see the outline of the sticker?

Because the paint around it has been exposed to sunlight and weather while the paint under the sticker was covered. The difference shows as a faint outline, sometimes called ghosting, even after all the glue has gone. A light polish often blends it in; a fine finishing polish such as AutoBead Finishing Compound, which AutoBead says can also be applied by hand, is the place to start. Deep fading may not blend completely.

Can you remove stickers from car windows the same way?

Yes, with care around heated rear screens and tints. Warm the sticker, peel it and dissolve the residue; Sonax lists glass among the surfaces Stain Ex is for, but not acrylic glass, so keep it off plastic windows such as those on caravans. Never scrape across heater elements or tint film, then finish with a glass cleaner. See how to clean car windows without streaks.
