The safe way to remove bird droppings and bug splatter from car paint, the products that do it, how to shift old dried marks, and how to stop them etching the paint.

How to remove bird poo and bugs from car paint: Dodo Juice Flies Undone, AutoBead Heavy Dirt and Infinity Wax Zero Water on The Drivers HQ display plinth

To remove bird poo or bug splatter from car paint, soften it first rather than wiping it dry: rinse or soak it, spray a bug and bird remover such as Dodo Juice Flies Undone, let it dwell without drying, then rinse or lift it off with a clean microfibre. For a bug-covered front end, AutoBead Heavy Dirt works as a pre-wash. Act before the sun bakes it on.

Will bird poo damage car paint?

It can. Bird droppings and baked-on insects are acidic and often contain hard bits, such as grit and seeds, that scratch if you rub them dry. Left on a hot panel they can etch the clear coat and leave a dull mark that stays after the dropping has gone. Dodo Juice puts it plainly: bird droppings are often more destructive to paint than insect remains, so the sooner you remove them, the better.

How do you remove bird poo from a car step by step?

Keep the panel cool, soften the mess, let a dedicated remover do the work, then wash and protect the panel. The steps follow Dodo Juice's own instructions.

  1. Keep the panel cool: Dodo Juice says panels should be cool or wet before you apply any strong cleaner, and the cleaner must never dry on the paint.
  2. Take off what you can without touching: rinse with a pressure washer first, as Dodo Juice advises: contactless is always best.
  3. Soak anything caked on: for hardened bird mess, Dodo Juice lays a damp sheet of kitchen towel over it for a few minutes until it softens, before any chemical goes on.
  4. Spray a bug and bird remover: spray Dodo Juice Flies Undone on the affected area, let it dwell for a few minutes, then rinse off.
  5. Lift what is left: for stubborn spots, Dodo Juice applies Flies Undone neat and wipes gently with a soft cloth until the mark has gone.
  6. Wash and protect: wash the panel, dry it and top up your wax or sealant, for example with AutoBead Spray Sealant, because a strong cleaner can weaken it.

  • Dodo Juice Flies Undone

A bug and bird mess remover with citrus cleaners and the added lubrication of a detailing spray, which Dodo Juice says reduces the chance of swirl marks compared with ordinary traffic film removers or pre-washes. Dodo Juice notes it is a strong cleaner that can attack weaker or less stable finishes.

Common questions

How do you remove old, dried bird poo stains?

Soften first, then lift. A hardened dropping needs time under a damp towel or a saturated paper towel before you touch it, and may need a second application rather than more pressure. If a dull or rough mark is left once the dropping has gone, the clear coat has been etched: a light etch can often be polished out with a fine polish, while a deep one needs a body shop. For choosing between a polish and a compound, see compound vs polish.

Can you use a quick detailer or kitchen roll to wipe it off?

Only once the dropping is softened. A dry wipe drags the grit across the paint. Dodo Juice says a detailing spray can gently remove bugs and bird mess but lacks the cleaning power of a dedicated product, and that an all-purpose or citrus cleaner will shift it but without the built-in lubrication, so there is more risk of swirls. If you carry anything in the car for emergencies, make it a spray with plenty of lubrication and a clean microfibre, never a dry tissue.

Is bug remover safe on glass?

Dodo Juice says Flies Undone is technically safe on glass but may leave smears, so follow it with a proper glass cleaner. Our guide on how to clean car windows without streaks covers that part.

How do you stop bird poo marking your paint?

Keep a layer of protection on the car and remove droppings quickly. Wax, sealant or a coating sits between the dropping and the clear coat and makes it easier to lift; see wax vs sealant vs ceramic coating. Parking away from trees and favourite perches helps too.
