How to Clean a Leather Steering Wheel (Shiny or Sticky)

Our guide to cleaning a shiny or sticky leather steering wheel, from identifying the finish to removing residue and checking grip. We explain gentle cleaning, suitable protection and when worn or damaged leather needs a different approach.

We recommend cleaning a leather steering wheel gently, keeping liquid away from the controls and checking the grip before driving. Apply a suitable cleaner such as AutoBead Leather Cleaner to a soft brush or cloth, work a small section and remove the residue. Sonax PROFILINE Leather Protection is an option only where its current instructions and your vehicle's care guidance allow steering-wheel use; apply sparingly, remove excess and let everything dry fully.

Why does a leather steering wheel get shiny and sticky?

Spray the brush, not the wheel, to keep cleaner out of switches and stitching.

Every drive leaves sweat, skin oils, hand cream and sanitiser on the rim, and they build up into a film that turns matt leather shiny, darker and tacky to the touch. Old greasy dressings make it worse. A careful clean can improve a dirty wheel, but shine can also reflect wear or a damaged coating. We would not keep scrubbing if the colour transfers, the finish breaks down or the surface remains sticky after a gentle clean.

How do you clean a leather steering wheel step by step?

We identify the material first, test a compatible cleaner and use minimal moisture. Cleaning and drying are the essentials; protection is optional and must be suitable for the steering wheel.

  1. Check what it is made of: smooth, pigmented leather is the usual finish. Alcantara, suede and nubuck need different care (see below), and most wheels also have plastic or metal spokes and trim.
  2. Test first: try a hidden spot on the back of the rim and check for colour transfer, coating damage or a change in texture before continuing.
  3. Apply the cleaner to the brush: spray onto a soft brush rather than straight onto the wheel, so cleaner does not run into switches, stitching or the airbag cover seams. AutoBead advises avoiding stitching when spraying its Leather Cleaner.
  4. Agitate gently: work a short section with a clean, soft brush or cloth. Let the cleaner loosen the dirt without heavy pressure; avoid abrasive pads on a worn finish.
  5. Wipe it clean: remove the cleaner as its instructions direct, using a clean, barely damp cloth where required. Avoid saturating seams and stop if repeated gentle cleaning does not improve the surface.
  6. Do the spokes and trim: wipe plastic spokes and trim with an interior cleaner or detailer on a microfibre.
  7. Protect, thinly: only use protection permitted for the steering wheel by the product and vehicle instructions. Sonax includes PROFILINE Leather Protection in its steering-wheel guide. Apply sparingly, remove excess and let it dry fully; leave the wheel clean and bare if suitability is unclear.

What is best to clean a leather steering wheel?

We would start with a cleaner approved for the wheel's leather finish and a clean, soft brush or cloth. pH-neutral does not mean suitable for every leather type, and a non-greasy product description does not by itself establish steering-wheel suitability.

  • AutoBead Leather Cleaner

A pH-neutral leather cleaner for a gentle maintenance clean where compatible with the wheel's finish. Test first, follow the label and avoid treating suede, nubuck or a damaged coating as ordinary smooth leather.

  • Sonax PROFILINE Leather Cleaner

A stronger foam option for compatible pigmented smooth leather. We would reserve it for dirt a gentler clean has not removed, after testing; it is not for suede, aniline or nubuck.

  • Sonax PROFILINE Leather Protection

A wax-free care product included in Sonax's steering-wheel guidance. Follow the current instructions and vehicle guidance, remove excess and check the dry wheel retains its normal grip.

  • Maxshine Horsehair Brush Large

A soft horsehair brush for gentle cleaning of compatible surfaces. Test first and keep the bristles clean.

  • FibreKing Scrub Pads

A dual-sided interior cleaning pad. We would use a softer cloth or brush first on a steering-wheel rim, especially where its finish is worn.

  • AutoBead Interior Detailer

For the plastic and metal spokes and trim, an anti-static detailer with light cleaning power that AutoBead says leaves a matt, OEM finish.

Common questions

How do you clean a sticky steering wheel?

We start with a gentle clean because skin oil, hand cream or old dressing may be responsible. If stickiness remains, colour transfers or the coating looks damaged, stop and have the finish assessed rather than continuing to scrub. Do not try to cover it with more product: a greasy dressing on a steering wheel makes it slippery, and grip matters more than shine.

Can you use interior detailer or all-purpose cleaner on a leather steering wheel?

Use a leather cleaner on the leather. AutoBead All Purpose Cleaner is not suitable for leather, and an unsuitable cleaner can damage the finish. A gentle interior detailer is fine for the plastic and metal parts of the wheel. For a full guide to leather products, see the best car leather cleaner.

How do you clean an Alcantara steering wheel?

Differently. Alcantara, suede and nubuck are not smooth leather, and Sonax says its leather cleaner and protection are not for suede or nubuck. Use as little moisture as possible, a cleaner made for those materials and a very soft brush, and brush the nap back up once it is dry. Our leather cleaner guide has a section on Alcantara, suede and nubuck.

How often should you clean a steering wheel?

AutoBead recommends maintaining leather monthly. A wheel is touched more than any other surface in the car, so a quick wipe in between, and a proper clean whenever it starts to look shiny, keeps it from building up.
