We clean a headliner with the least moisture and pressure needed. Gently remove loose dust, test a hidden area, then apply a suitable cleaner such as Dodo Juice Cabin Krug or Stjarnagloss Inni to a cloth rather than spraying the lining. Dab the mark and let the area dry before deciding whether it needs more work. If the fabric is already sagging or separating, cleaning is not the repair.
Why is a car headliner so easy to damage?
Most headliners are a thin fabric glued to a foam-backed board. Too much liquid soaks through to the glue, too much pressure stretches the fabric and pushes the foam, and scrubbing one spot leaves a cleaner patch with a tidemark around it. That is why the method matters more than the product: little liquid, a light touch and even work across the whole area.
How do you clean a car headliner step by step?
We check the lining's condition before cleaning, then test a small hidden area. Use a lightly dampened cloth and minimal pressure, allow drying between attempts and stop if the fabric or backing begins to move.
- Vacuum gently: use low suction and a soft attachment without pressing or pulling on the lining. Skip vacuuming if the fabric is loose or fragile.
- Test first: try a hidden area, such as above a sun visor.
- Spray the cloth, not the roof: apply a small amount of compatible cleaner to the cloth so you can control the moisture. We would not spray the headliner directly.
- Dab and wipe lightly: lift the mark with light pressure. If a cloth is insufficient, test a very soft brush before using it; avoid pulling fibres or working a wet area repeatedly.
- Blend outwards: lightly blend the edge of the cleaned area without spreading moisture across the whole roof. Let it dry before judging the result; concentrated cleaner left in one spot can create a visible patch.
- Buff with the dry side: blot gently with a dry cloth rather than rubbing, then ventilate the car in a secure, dry place.
What is the best thing to clean a car headliner with?
We start with a mild cleaner compatible with the headliner material and a soft cloth. More aggressive tools are not automatically better for a stubborn stain; check the lining's condition before doing more.

Common questions
Can you use a steam cleaner or upholstery shampoo on a headliner?
Be very careful. Heat and moisture are what loosen headliner glue, so a steam cleaner or a wet upholstery shampoo held in one place is the quickest way to make a roof lining sag. A mild cleaner on a cloth, a soft brush and patience is the safer route. If the fabric is already drooping, cleaning will not fix it; that needs re-trimming.
How do you get stains out of a headliner?
Blot, do not rub. Lift as much as you can with a dry cloth first, then dab with a cloth lightly dampened with interior cleaner, working from the outside of the stain inwards so you do not spread it, and blend the area at the end. Repeat a few light passes rather than one heavy one. How do you keep a headliner clean?
Most headliner marks come from hands: getting in and out, adjusting the sun visors and grabbing the handles. Keep the visors, grab handles and the area around the interior lights wiped with a lightly dampened cloth as part of every interior clean, so grime never builds up enough to need heavy cleaning. Avoid spraying air fresheners or interior dressings upwards, and keep greasy hands and products such as tyre dressing away from the roof when you load the car.
