Leather seats look and feel their best when they are cleaned gently and often, before dirt and body oils work into the grain. This guide explains the difference between a leather cleaner, a conditioner and an all-in-one foam, shows how to clean leather car seats without damaging them, and compares the leather cleaners we stock using each maker's own words.
What is the best car leather cleaner in the UK?
For most leather car seats, AutoBead Leather Cleaner is our first pick: AutoBead says it is pH neutral, safe for all leather types and conditions as it cleans. For worn seats that have gone shiny, Sonax PROFILINE Leather Cleaner makes leather matt again. For heated or perforated seats, Sonax says its XTREME Leather Care Foam is ideal.
Leather cleaner, conditioner or all-in-one?
A leather cleaner lifts dirt, grease and body oils out of the grain. A leather conditioner or protection cream goes on after cleaning to keep the leather supple and, in some cases, to add UV protection against fading. An all-in-one product cleans and cares for the leather in one step, which suits regular maintenance. AutoBead Leather Cleaner and Sonax XTREME Leather Care Foam are both made to clean and care for leather in one step, according to their makers.
Our picks by job
Every pick below is in stock with us, and every claim comes from the maker's own listing or website.
Everyday leather cleaning
- AutoBead Leather Cleaner: a pH neutral cleanser and conditioner that AutoBead says is safe for all leather types. AutoBead says its pH formulation does not remove the essential oils in the leather, so it stays supple and does not crack, and that it leaves a natural leather smell.
- Sonax XTREME Leather Care Foam: a silicone free foam that Sonax makes for cleaning and caring for genuine and imitation smooth leather of any colour. Sonax says it restores the leather's suppleness and is ideal for cars with heated seats and for perforated leather.
Worn, shiny or heavily soiled leather
- Sonax PROFILINE Leather Cleaner (1 litre): a leather cleaner from Sonax's PROFILINE range for leather car seats and upholstery. Sonax says it makes shiny leather matt again and brings it back to new condition.
Conditioning and UV protection
- Sonax PROFILINE Leather Protection (1 litre): wax-free leather care with UV protection for smooth leather. Sonax says it freshens up and maintains the leather's colour, has an anti-creaking additive for a supple, soft feel, and evaporates quickly without a greasy finish.
Mixed cabins: leather, plastics and fabric
If you want one bottle for the whole interior, these all-surface cleaners are listed by their makers as safe on leather:
- Stjarnagloss Inni: a water-based all-surface interior cleaner that its listing says is safe on leather seats and suitable for most common automotive leather, as well as plastics, vinyl and fabric.
- Yum Interior: a 4-in-1 interior cleaner that Yum says is safe on leather, plastics and fabric. Yum says it can be diluted by up to 50% with water for sensitive leather.
- CarPro Inside: an interior cleaner that CarPro lists for finished leather, upholstery, plastic and vinyl.
Our interior cleaner guide compares these and more for dashboards and plastics.
Brushes and cloths
AutoBead's method uses a soft detailing brush to work its cleaner into a foam. The Better Detailing Premium Natural Boar Hair Detailing Brush is one we stock, and you will find more in our interior detailing brushes. Keep clean, soft microfibre cloths for wiping off: our guide to the best microfibre cloths for cars explains which ones to keep for the interior.

How do you clean leather car seats?
- Vacuum the seats first, including the seams and the gaps around them, so no grit is rubbed into the leather. Sonax starts its method the same way.
- Test the cleaner on a hidden area before you start.
- Apply the cleaner the way its maker says. AutoBead says to spray its cleaner directly onto the leather, avoiding the stitching. Sonax says to put its foam onto a care pad or a microfibre cloth.
- Work it in gently. AutoBead says to agitate with a soft detailing brush to make a foam and lift the dirt. Sonax says to treat the whole surface, for example a complete seat, rather than patches.
- Wipe it off. AutoBead says to let the surface absorb the foam dry, then wipe it clean with a clean, damp cloth.
- Repeat on heavy dirt. Sonax says to repeat the application on heavily soiled leather.
- Condition if your cleaner does not. A cream such as Sonax PROFILINE Leather Protection adds UV protection and keeps the leather supple.
On perforated seats, use as little liquid as possible so nothing soaks into the holes. Sonax makes its XTREME foam with heated and perforated seats in mind.
How often should you clean leather car seats?
AutoBead recommends cleaning with its Leather Cleaner monthly to prolong the life of the leather. Wipe up spills as soon as they happen, and give the parts that see daily use, such as the driver's seat bolster and the steering wheel, a little more attention than the rest. Light coloured leather shows dye from jeans quickly, so it benefits from regular cleaning too.
Can you use an all purpose cleaner on leather?
Only if its maker says so. AutoBead says its own All Purpose Cleaner is not suitable for leather, which is why it makes a separate Leather Cleaner. The all-surface cleaners above are the exception, because Stjarnagloss, Yum and CarPro list them for leather. Avoid household cleaners that are not made for car leather.
What about Alcantara, suede and nubuck?
These have a brushed surface rather than a smooth one, and Sonax lists its XTREME foam and PROFILINE Leather Protection for smooth leather. Use a cleaner made for them: CarPro lists CarPro Inside for Alcantara at a 1:10 dilution, and says not to leave it on the surface for more than 5 minutes.
