How to restore faded plastic trim: Dodo Juice Pneu Look, Dodo Juice Dark Matter and 303 Aerospace Protectant on The Drivers HQ display plinth

To restore faded plastic trim on a car, deep clean it with a trim cleaner such as Dodo Juice Pneu Look to strip old dressing and grime, let it dry, then work in a dressing such as Dodo Juice Dark Matter and buff off the excess. Most grey, chalky trim is dirty and dried out rather than damaged, so cleaning plus a good dressing brings back the black.

Why does black plastic trim fade?

Unpainted textured plastic on bumpers, mirrors, wiper scuttles and arches spends its life in sunlight, rain and road grime. UV dries the surface out and lightens it, and old silicone dressings, wax residue and traffic film collect in the grain and turn it grey or blotchy. Wax that dries on trim during a detail leaves white marks too. That is why the first step is always a deep clean, not another layer of dressing on top of the dirt.

How do you restore faded plastic trim step by step?

Clean the plastic properly, dry it, then dress it thinly and buff it. The deep clean does most of the work, and the dressing brings back the colour.

  1. Wash the car: start clean so you are not grinding grit into the trim.
  2. Deep clean the trim: spray Dodo Juice Pneu Look onto the plastic and work it into the grain with a soft brush. Dodo Juice says it removes grease, grime, oils and old dressings, and that for trim you should use a softer brush and repeat on stubborn deposits.
  3. Rinse and repeat: rinse thoroughly. Dodo Juice's tell-tale on tyres is that the foam turns brown while dirt is still coming out and stays white once it is clean, and the same check works on trim.
  4. Dry it completely: dressing goes on clean, dry plastic. Dry the grain with a microfibre or leave it to air dry.
  5. Mask off the paint if you like: low-tack tape along the edge keeps dressing off the bodywork on narrow strips.
  6. Apply the dressing: put a small amount on a foam applicator or microfibre, not straight onto the trim, and work it into the grain evenly.
  7. Buff off the excess: use a clean, dry microfibre so the finish is even and dry to the touch rather than greasy.
  8. Top up regularly: re-apply when water stops beading on the trim or the colour starts to lighten again.

Common questions

Can you permanently restore faded plastic trim?

Not with a dressing. Dressings sit on and in the surface of the plastic and wear away with washing, rain and sunlight, so they need topping up. A dedicated trim coating lasts much longer than a dressing because it bonds to the clean plastic, but it still relies on the same thorough deep clean first. Trim that is cracked, chalky all the way through or physically damaged cannot be brought back by any product and needs replacing.

How long does trim dressing last?

It depends on the product, the weather and how often the car is washed. Water-based dressings and UV protectants are made to be re-applied regularly; the 303 listing advises re-applying periodically for continued UV protection. A simple test: when rain stops beading on the trim or the colour starts to lighten, it is time for another coat.

Can you use tyre dressing on plastic trim?

Only if it is made for both. Dodo Juice Dark Matter is a tyre and trim dressing, so it suits both jobs. Gloss tyre gels are made for rubber sidewalls, can look greasy on trim and are better kept to tyres. For tyre products, see the best tyre dressing guide and how to remove tyre browning.
