Best Tyre Dressing UK: Gloss, Satin and How to Apply It

Gloss or satin, gel or spray: the tyre dressings we stock compared in their makers' own words, how long each lasts, and how to apply a dressing without sling.

Best tyre dressing UK: CarPro DarkSide, AutoBead Tyre Dressing and Sonax XTREME Tyre Gloss Spray with a foam applicator beside a black alloy wheel

Tyre dressing, also sold as tyre shine, is the last step that makes clean wheels look finished, but the choice is wide: gels and creams you work in with a pad, satin dressings for tyres and trim, long-lasting sealants and quick spray-on gloss. This guide explains the difference, how to apply a dressing without sling, and compares the tyre dressings we stock using each maker's own words.

What is the best tyre dressing in the UK?

It depends on the finish you want and how you like to apply it. AutoBead Tyre Dressing is our first pick: a gel you can build from a natural look to a higher gloss. CarPro Darkside gives a satin black finish that CarPro says lasts up to 3 months, and Sonax XTREME Tyre Gloss Spray gives a quick wet look.

Gloss or satin?

A gloss or wet look dressing leaves a deep, shiny black. A satin dressing leaves a darker, factory look with less shine. Several of the dressings below let you choose: AutoBead says a second layer gives a higher gloss, and Yum says Dress V2 goes from satin to a rich dark finish.

Our picks by type

Every pick below is in stock with us, and every claim comes from the maker's own listing or website.

Gels and creams you apply with a pad

  • AutoBead Tyre Dressing: a gel-based, anti-sling sealant with high-quality silicone that AutoBead says dresses the rubber and protects it from UV rays and cracking. Apply it with a foam applicator to a clean tyre wall, keep it off the tread, and add a second layer if you want a higher-gloss wet look.
  • Sonax XTREME Tyre Gloss Gel: a gel for what Sonax calls an ultimate, glossy black wet look that lasts several weeks. Sonax says to put a strip of about 5cm on an application sponge and massage it into the sidewall, and that 500ml is enough for at least 50 tyres.
  • Alchemy Soul Glo 2000: a silicone oil gel that restores a deep black, at just 2 to 3 pea-sized drops per tyre on a foam applicator.
  • Deturner Cream Tire Dressing: a solvent-free, water and SiO2 based cream with a satin finish, hydrophobic properties and no greasy residue. Deturner says to prepare the tyre with a tyre cleaner or APC first.

Satin dressings for tyres and trim

  • Yum Dress V2: a water-based dressing with an adjustable satin to rich dark finish, used neat on tyres and trim.
  • Dodo Juice Dark Matter: a water-resistant tyre and trim dressing with a dark satin finish. Buff off the excess after it settles to cut down sling.

Long-lasting tyre sealant

  • CarPro Darkside: a ready to use tyre and rubber sealant made with 60% polydimethylsiloxane. CarPro says it leaves a satin black shine, is highly hydrophobic and UV resistant, and lasts up to 3 months. Squirt it 2 to 3 times onto a tyre applicator, then let it dry for 1 to 2 hours away from water.

Spray-on gloss

  • Sonax XTREME Tyre Gloss Spray: a wet look spray that Sonax says gives a rich, deep shine for several weeks and is enough for up to 40 tyres. Spray it on thinly and let it work in. Sonax says regular use helps prevent cracking, premature ageing, brown discolouration and fading.
  • Sonax Tyre Gloss Black Beast Effect: a deep black gloss spray with a fruity berry scent. Sonax says to spray it evenly from about 20cm onto a clean, dry tyre, leave it for 5 minutes, and use a cloth to take off runs or tone down the gloss.

A matt finish for tyres and wheels

  • Sonax XTREME Ceramic Tyre and Rim: a spray that Sonax says leaves a matt look on tyres and rubber and a high gloss on rims, and protects against dirt, premature ageing, cracking and weathering. Spray it onto a sponge, not straight onto the tyre, then spread it evenly.

The applicator

  • TDHQ Tyre Dressing Applicator: our own applicator, with a crescent curved pad for even application and a solid foam block grip for steady pressure. Wash it and let it air dry after use.

How do you apply tyre dressing without sling?

  1. Clean the sidewall first. A dressing laid over old dressing or browning looks patchy, and our guide on how to remove tyre browning shows how.
  2. Let the tyre dry fully.
  3. Put a small amount on an applicator, not straight onto the tyre, and work it into the sidewall only. AutoBead and Sonax both say to keep dressing off the tread.
  4. For an aerosol, spray thinly and evenly, then wipe off any runs with a cloth, as Sonax advises.
  5. Buff off any excess once it has settled, which Dodo Juice says cuts down sling.
  6. Give it time to dry before you drive or it gets wet. CarPro says Darkside needs 1 to 2 hours away from water.

How long does tyre dressing last?

It depends on the product, the weather and how often you wash the car. The makers' own figures give a guide: CarPro says Darkside lasts up to 3 months, and Sonax says its tyre gloss sprays and gel keep the look for several weeks. A second thin layer, or a top-up after each wash, keeps the finish even.

Is tyre dressing good for tyres?

Used on the sidewall, the makers say it helps. AutoBead says its dressing protects the rubber from UV rays and cracking, CarPro says Darkside is UV resistant, and Sonax says regular use of its spray helps prevent cracking, premature ageing and fading. Keep any dressing off the tread and away from the brakes: Sonax lists both as places not to use its products.
