We compare car glass cleaners from our range for everyday cleaning, coated screens and optional water repellency. The guide explains tint compatibility, cloth choice and application, with independent magazine findings kept separate from our product recommendations.

Best car glass cleaner UK: CarPro Clarify Glass Cleaner on The Drivers HQ display plinth in front of a dark blue Volvo XC60

We choose a car glass cleaner around the surface and the finish you want. Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol is our straightforward cleaning pick; Stjarnagloss Glas also covers compatible clear plastics. For suitable coated glass, consider CarPro Clarify, while Clarify PHOBIC adds water repellency as it cleans. This guide compares the glass cleaners we stock and explains where each fits, with clean cloths and careful buffing doing just as much work as the bottle.

What is the best car glass cleaner in the UK?

We start with compatibility and whether you want cleaning alone or added water repellency. Clearly Menthol and Stjarnagloss Glas are our straightforward solvent-based options for suitable automotive glass. If your screen has a ceramic coating or rain repellent on it, CarPro Clarify cleans without harming that layer. If you want the water to bead and run off the screen, choose a hydrophobic cleaner such as Clarify PHOBIC or the VP-UK Glass Cleaner, which clean and leave a repellent layer in one step.

What does the magazine testing say?

Car Mechanics magazine tested 27 glass cleaners in its September 2025 group test, scoring each out of 100 across ten categories, from coverage and smell to streaks, smears and fingermark removal, with the testing done in winter. Three of the cleaners we stock were in it:

Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol sprayed onto a glass cloth beside a Volvo XC60 windscreen
Spray the cloth or dry glass, then wipe with a lint-free glass cloth.
  • Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol was named a "Car Mechanics Recommended Product" with an overall score of 91, and the tester wrote that it "evaporated very quickly giving a streak-free finish".
  • CarPro Clarify scored 87, described as a product that "gives a streak-free, high-shine".
  • Stjarnagloss Glas scored 85.

The other cleaners on this page were not part of that test. Read the Car Mechanics test.

Our picks by job

Everyday streak-free cleaning: Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol

  • Dodo Juice Clearly Menthol

A mint-scented, solvent-based cleaner for automotive glass. We recommend a small amount on the glass or a clean cloth, followed by a dry buff rather than repeatedly adding more product.

Glass, mirrors and clear plastics: Stjarnagloss Glas

  • Stjarnagloss Glas

A solvent-based option for compatible glass and clear plastics. Use a softer cloth on plastic and confirm tint compatibility; the tint-safe claim assumes a sound, properly applied film. We would choose it for fingerprints and oily film where those surface conditions are met.

    From £9.00In stockChoose options

Coated glass: CarPro Clarify

  • CarPro Clarify

A dedicated cleaner designed for use around compatible hydrophobic glass coatings. It suits a maintenance clean when you want to remove film without deliberately adding more repellency. Spray it once or twice onto a glass towel, wipe with firm pressure, then flip to a dry side and buff.

    From £8.99In stockChoose options

Clean and repel water in one step: CarPro Clarify PHOBIC

  • CarPro Clarify PHOBIC

The cleaning power of the original Clarify, leaving a highly hydrophobic layer. We would consider it when added water repellency is wanted on compatible glass. If the wipers already smear or judder, diagnose that problem before layering another product. It goes on wet or dry glass, and CarPro uses fewer sprays on coated glass.

    From £12.99In stockChoose options

A hydrophobic cleaner for inside and out: VP-UK Glass Cleaner

  • VP-UK Glass Cleaner

A cleaner with an added hydrophobic finish. Check the current instructions for your glass, tint, mirror or plastic surface; we would choose it for the finish it leaves, not assume repellency is needed everywhere.

Which cloth should you use on car glass?

A dedicated glass cloth matters as much as the cleaner, because a fluffy cloth leaves lint and a dirty one leaves smears. Keep two: one to wipe, one to buff dry.

How do you get streak-free car glass?

Use a solvent-based glass cleaner sparingly on cool glass and buff with a clean, dry glass cloth. Two cloths, one to wipe and one to buff, make the biggest difference.

  1. Work in the shade: use cool glass, so the cleaner does not dry before you wipe it.
  2. Spray lightly: mist the glass or the cloth, a small section at a time.
  3. Wipe and buff: wipe with one cloth, then turn it or swap to a clean, dry glass cloth and buff until clear.
  4. Do the inside last: spray the cloth rather than the glass so the cleaner stays off the dashboard.
  5. Check from different angles: look from the driving seat too, and buff any marks you find.

Common questions

Is a hydrophobic glass cleaner worth it?

It can be useful if you want water repellency as part of maintenance, but it is optional. We prioritise clean glass and sound wipers first. Check compatibility with any existing coating and follow the application instructions carefully; a repellent does not guarantee freedom from smearing or chatter. If the glass is already coated, use a cleaner that is safe on the coating, such as Clarify, between top-ups.

Can you use household glass cleaner on a car?

We prefer a cleaner specifically suitable for automotive glass and its surrounding materials. Household formulations vary, so check the label rather than assuming every household spray is unsuitable or every automotive one suits tint. Tinted windows need care too: Car Mechanics noted in its test that some glass cleaners cannot safely be used on factory tinted windows, so check the label before you use any cleaner on tint.

Are car glass cleaners safe on window tint?

Check both the cleaner and tint-film instructions. We use a soft cloth and avoid damaged film or exposed edges. Stjarnagloss Glas specifies sound, properly applied tint; a product's broad tint-safe description is not a guarantee for every film.
