Best Citrus Pre Wash UK: Everyday, Deep Clean or Snow Foam

Our guide to choosing citrus pre-wash for everyday traffic film or a deeper clean. We explain dilution, dwell time, protection compatibility and how spray pre-washes differ from snow foam, with practical choices from our range.

Best citrus pre-wash UK: Dodo Juice Crudzilla on The Drivers HQ display plinth in front of a grey Kia Sorento covered in snow foam

We use pre-wash as the stage that reduces how much dirt your mitt has to touch. For a gentle whole-car pre-wash on protected paint, AutoBead Snow Foam Pre-Wash through a foam lance is where we start. When the lower panels carry heavy road film or winter grime, Stjarnagloss Forst is our citrus spray of choice. For a planned deep clean before renewing protection, Dodo Juice Crudzilla is our pick, because it is made to strip old wax and sealant. Choose by surface, contamination and protection rather than the citrus label alone.

What is the best citrus pre wash in the UK?

For heavy road film and winter grime we recommend Stjarnagloss Forst: a ready-to-use citrus traffic film remover with natural orange oil that you spray on the dirtiest areas and rinse off after a few minutes. Choose Crudzilla when you intend to strip and renew protection afterwards, and Forst X if you would rather mix your own strength from a concentrate. On a well-protected car that is only lightly dirty, a gentler snow foam is often enough. CarPro Multi X covers pre-wash and deep cleaning from one concentrate, but check its dilution and the surfaces it must not touch.

Here is how the citrus pre-washes we stock compare, and how they differ from snow foam.

What does a citrus pre-wash do?

It is the first chemical stage of a wash. You spray it onto the dirtiest parts of the car, usually the lower panels, the front and the rear, let it work for a few minutes and rinse it off. It softens the traffic film, bug remains and grime that a wash mitt would otherwise drag across the paint, so far less dirt is left for the contact wash. The more dirt the mitt meets, the more chance of swirl marks.

Is citrus pre-wash better than snow foam?

Neither format is automatically stronger. A trigger or pump sprayer helps target dirty lower panels, while a foam lance covers larger areas and makes coverage easy to see. Cleaning power depends on the formula and the concentration reaching the paint. We recommend using the fewest compatible pre-wash stages needed, rather than automatically applying both.

Some products sit between the two: Dodo Juice iFoam Max is a traffic film remover in snow foam form. Our guide to the best snow foam compares the foams themselves.

Our picks by job

These are our picks for different levels of cleaning. Check the current label for dilution, approved surfaces and dwell time before choosing between routine maintenance and a protection-stripping deep clean.

Heavy road film and winter grime

  • Stjarnagloss Forst

A ready-to-use citrus pre-cleaner and traffic film remover with natural orange oil. It is a strong alkaline cleaner, so spray it only where the dirt sits, usually the lower half and the rear, give it a few minutes and jet-wash it off before it can dry. On a fully cured ceramic coating keep the dwell short and rinse thoroughly; keep it off a coating that is still curing.

  • Stjarnagloss Forst X

The concentrate. Mixed 50/50 with water it makes standard-strength Forst, so 1 litre gives you 2 litres, and you can dilute it further for lighter cleans. On a ceramic-coated car, mix it 50/50 or weaker. It comes without a sprayer, so use a chemical-resistant trigger or pump sprayer.

Deep cleans before polishing or new protection

  • Dodo Juice Crudzilla

A citrus traffic film remover that Dodo Juice made to strip contamination, waxes and sealants as far as possible, so you can start afresh before polishing, sealing or re-waxing. It is not pH neutral, and it is for deep cleans rather than maintenance washes. Spray it on the lower halves, rear sections and bug-splattered areas, leave it for a minute or two and pressure rinse.

One bottle for pre-wash and deep cleaning

  • CarPro Multi X

A concentrated all-purpose cleaner that works both as a pre-wash cleanser and for deep cleaning and stain removal at the end of a wash. Use it at 1:20, richer for heavy dirt, or 1:100 through a pressure washer. Never use it undiluted, on leather, or on bare aluminium or other uncoated metals.

    From £10.99In stockChoose options

Pre-wash in foam form

  • AutoBead Snow Foam Pre-Wash

A concentrated pre-wash with a mild alkaline base that will not degrade your last stage protection at the correct dilution. Mix 1 part to 4 parts water in the lance bottle, foam from the bottom up and leave it for up to 10 minutes before rinsing from the top.

    From £11.95In stockChoose options
  • Dodo Juice iFoam Max

An alkaline snow foam with traffic film removing ingredients, used at 50ml to 100ml in a 1 litre lance bottle. It is not for sealed, waxed or delicate finishes and may weaken older or less robust waxes and sealants, so plan to top up protection afterwards.

How do you use a citrus pre-wash?

Apply the correctly diluted pre-wash to cool panels, allow the labelled dwell without letting it dry, and rinse thoroughly. We recommend removing loose grit before brushing intricate areas; pre-wash should reduce unnecessary contact with dirty paint.

  1. Work cool and wet: stay in the shade on cool panels and wet them first. Never let Forst or Crudzilla dry on the car, especially in summer.
  2. Mix it: ready-to-use sprays such as Forst go on as they come. Concentrates need a marked bottle at the right ratio, such as Forst X at 50/50 or Multi X at 1:20. Our guide to dilution ratios explains the numbers.
  3. Rinse off loose mud: if the car is caked in loose mud or grit, rinse that off first so the cleaner reaches the film underneath.
  4. Spray the dirtiest areas: be generous on the sills, lower doors, the rear, the front and the mirrors.
  5. Let it dwell: leave it for the labelled dwell time, a few minutes for Forst or a minute or two for Crudzilla, and never let it dry.
  6. Treat details carefully: only use a clean, suitably soft brush where needed and after loose grit has been removed. Avoid brushing gritty paint or pushing against vulnerable wrap and PPF edges.
  7. Rinse thoroughly: pressure rinse, snow foam if you use one, then move on to the contact wash.

Common questions

Is citrus pre-wash safe on wax and ceramic coatings?

It depends on the product and the mix. AutoBead Snow Foam is the gentle option: at the correct dilution it will not degrade your last stage protection. Forst is a strong alkaline cleaner, so on a fully cured ceramic coating keep the dwell short and rinse thoroughly, mix Forst X 50/50 or weaker, and keep both off a coating that is still curing. Crudzilla is the opposite of the snow foam by design: it will try to strip existing protection, although it may not remove the strongest ceramic sealants and still leaves the surface clean enough for detailing products over the top. On a coated car, start with the gentlest product that shifts the dirt and follow the coating maker's wash advice.

Which surfaces should you keep it away from?

Read the label first. Chrome window surrounds, anodised wheel nuts, black powder-coated wheels, plastic exterior parts and dark paint in hard water areas are more susceptible to strong cleaners such as Forst and Crudzilla, so keep them off those areas where you can; if you do use them there, rinse almost straight away and never let them dry. If a chalky or cloudy residue appears afterwards and it is only a deposit rather than etching, a mild polish or a water spot remover will clear it. Multi X must never be used undiluted, on leather or on bare aluminium and other uncoated metals.

Can you put citrus pre-wash through a snow foam lance?

Some are made for it: Dodo Juice iFoam Max is a traffic film remover in snow foam form, and AutoBead Snow Foam goes into the lance bottle at 1 part to 4 parts water. Sprayed pre-washes such as Forst go on through a trigger or pump sprayer, which is the better tool for putting a stronger cleaner exactly where the dirt sits. To foam, you need a snow foam lance on a pressure washer.

Do you need gloves for citrus pre-wash?

Follow the product label and safety data sheet for the required gloves and eye protection. Chemical resistance depends on the glove material, thickness and exposure time; nitrile alone is not a universal guarantee. Check suitable options in our gloves and PPE range and avoid spray drift and splashback.
