Q1 Precision Line masking tape

Ultra thin paper. Precision Line is an ultra thin paper masking tape, Q1's item 3560, made for razor sharp paint edges. It sticks firmly to smooth surfaces and comes away cleanly without leaving residue or lifting the surface underneath.

The numbers. Q1 publishes a total thickness of 92 microns, a weight of 82 g/m2, a tensile strength of 30 N/cm, 3.5% elongation at break and 1.4 N/cm adhesion to steel.

How long it can stay on. Up to 1 week on sensitive surfaces and up to 2 weeks on common surfaces such as glass, aluminium, PVC and wood, still with a clean, residue free removal. More tapes in masking tapes.

Masking up with Q1 tape

Before you mask. Clean and dry the surface first: tape only grips as well as the panel, trim or glass it sits on, and dust or polish residue under the edge lets paint creep.

Laying the edge. Run the tape in one smooth pull rather than short stretched pieces, then press the edge down firmly with a fingernail or a plastic card so paint cannot bleed underneath.

Which width. The 24mm roll suits fine lines, badges, trim and window rubbers; the 50mm roll covers wider edges and holds masking paper or sheeting in place.

Taking it off. Peel the tape back on itself at a low angle, slowly, once the paint is touch dry, so the line stays crisp. Do not leave it on longer than Q1's limits for the surface.

For detailers. Masking tape also protects rubber seals, plastic trim and badges from polish and compound when you machine polish a car.
