From Aircraft Coatings to Windscreens

From Aircraft Coatings to Windscreens

Rain-X traces its story to its inventor, Howard Ohlhausen. The brand says that while serving in the Air Force he identified the need to improve visibility in flying aircraft during inclement weather, and that he later set up a small laboratory to experiment with coatings and water repellents. After years of testing, he invented and patented several ultra thin polymer coatings that made glass and other surfaces water and soil repellent.

According to Rain-X, The Unelko Company began in 1971 in Chicago, Illinois, when Howard Ohlhausen invented and patented one of the first invisible coatings for glass. He and his sons trademarked Repcon, a rain repellent and surface conditioner for aircraft and military vehicles, and Rain-X, a glass treatment and rain repellent to improve visibility and driving safety in bad weather, which first became commercially available in 1972. In 1981 he moved the family business to Scottsdale, Arizona.

Unelko sold Rain-X to Quaker State Co. in 1997, and after a series of mergers and acquisitions the brand became part of the car care business of Shell's SOPUS Products. In March 2011, Illinois Tool Works acquired that car care business, including Rain-X, Black Magic and Gumout. Rain-X has since celebrated its 50th anniversary.

About Rain-X

Rain-X is a car care brand that describes itself as a worldwide automotive brand known for safe driving visibility. According to the brand, the Rain-X name was first used in 1972, and for 50 years it has provided drivers with products to help them outsmart the elements. Its range grew from glass care, including its Original Glass Treatment water beading technology, wiper blades and glass cleaners, and has since expanded into car washes, waxes, bug and tar removers and headlight restoration kits. Rain-X has been part of Illinois Tool Works since 2011.

The Drivers HQ stocks Rain-X Rain Repellent 200ml, part of our Glass Sealants range. Rain-X says this compact bottle helps keep the windscreen and side windows clear on rainy days, using a technology that changes the contact angle of water droplets so they bead up and fly off the glass as you drive. The brand says it improves visibility in rain, sleet and snow, and that because the droplets roll away easily, dirt, mud and insects are less likely to stick, so the windscreen stays cleaner for longer.

Rain Repellent suits any driver who wants clearer glass in bad weather, and it slots in at the end of a detailing routine once the glass is properly clean. Rain-X advises cleaning and drying the surface first, then applying the product at temperatures above 4°C with a small folded dry cloth, using vigorous circular movements. It is then left to dry, and a white haze may form, before the last film is removed with a dry cloth. The brand also says it should not be used on plastic surfaces such as motorbike visors, ATVs or Plexiglas windows.

Buy Rain-X from The Drivers HQ with tracked UK-wide delivery by Royal Mail, or call in at our walk-in store in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, where Click & Collect is free. Glass Care and Water Beading Technology

Glass Care and Water Beading Technology

Glass care sits at the heart of the Rain-X range. The brand says its invisible coating uses hydrophobic science to create an imperceptible shield, and explains that the technology modifies the surface tension of water, increasing the contact angle of the drops so they become rounder and are easily blown away by the wind or the windscreen wipers.

Alongside Rain Repellent 200 ml and a 500 ml version, the UK glass range includes Anti-Fog for interior glass, 2 in 1 Glass Cleaner and Rain Repellent, glass cleaner and rain repellent wipes, and X-treme Clean and Headlight Restorer. Rain-X says Rain Repellent generally lasts about 3 months, depending on weather and environmental conditions, and recommends X-treme Clean for removing the treatment from glass.

Beyond glass, Rain-X's UK range covers screen wash with insect remover, an insect remover and protectant, plastic restorer, leather and upholstery care and a dashboard and screen cleaner, along with accessories such as a detailing bucket and a wheel rim brush. The Drivers HQ currently stocks Rain-X Rain Repellent 200ml from the range, in our Glass Sealants collection.
