How To Use

Applying

  1. Clean and dry the glass thoroughly.
  2. Work in the shade on cool glass.
  3. Apply a thin, even layer as the bottle directs.
  4. Let it haze for the time on the bottle.
  5. Buff the glass clear with a clean microfibre.

Afterwards

  1. Check for smears from inside and outside.
  2. Keep the wipers off until it has set.
  3. Top it up when water stops beading.
  4. Store the bottle upright out of direct sunlight.

Top Tip: Checking the glass from inside the car shows any smears the light outside hides.

The Brand

Rain-X

Rain-X goes back to 1971, when Howard Ohlhausen started The Unelko Company in Chicago and invented and patented one of the first invisible coatings for glass, a way of making non porous surfaces repel water, soil and stains. With his sons he trademarked Repcon, a rain repellent for aircraft and military vehicles, and Rain-X, a glass treatment for better visibility in bad weather, which went on sale in 1972. In 1981 the family moved the business to Scottsdale, Arizona.

Rain-X Rain Repellent

How it works. Rain-X changes the contact angle of water drops on the glass, so rain beads up and flies off the windscreen as you drive. That clears the view in rain, sleet and snow, and helps stop dirt, mud and insects sticking to the glass.

The 200ml bottle. A compact size for the windscreen and side windows, handy for quick top ups.

Glass only. Do not use it on plastic, including motorbike visors, ATVs, Plexiglas windows and solar panels.

Motorsport. Rain-X has a long history of motorsport sponsorship, with drivers including Mario Andretti and Scott Sharp and the Newman/Haas team.

Applying Rain-X to a windscreen

Start clean. Wash and dry the glass first so nothing is sealed under the coating.

Apply. Spray or pour Rain-X onto a small folded dry cloth and rub it onto the outside of the windscreen with firm circular movements, overlapping each pass so the whole glass is covered. Apply a second coat for complete, even coverage.

Remove the haze. Take off the last film with a dry cloth, or mist the glass with water and wipe it off with a paper towel.

Keep it working. Reapply when water stops beading. Rain-X also works on glass shower doors and windows at home, but not on plastic, fibreglass, sandblasted or patterned shower doors.
