Frequently Asked Questions

What is it for?

It is a Sam's Detailing clay bar for removing bonded contamination.

Do I need a clay lubricant?

Yes, keep the paint and the clay well lubricated so it glides without marring.

What if I drop it?

Throw that piece away, as grit picked up from the ground will scratch the paint.

Will claying mark the paint?

Clay can leave light marring, so follow with a polish before protecting the paint.

Can I use it in direct sunlight?

No, work in the shade on cool panels so the lubricant never dries.

Who makes it?

It is made by Sam's Detailing and sold by The Drivers HQ.

What else do I need?

A clay lubricant and clean, plush microfibre towels.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes, The Drivers HQ offers UK-wide delivery.

The Brand

Sam's Detailing

Sam's Detailing (often searched as Sams Detailing or Sam Detailing) is a car care brand from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Sam saved up for years to launch a range of detailing products that are easy to understand and easy to use: the products Sam wanted when detailing a car at weekends. The range now covers every stage of a home detail, from snow foam and shampoo to wheel cleaners, ceramic sprays, dressings, interior cleaners, microfibres, brushes and air fresheners, and Sam's Detailing has retailers in more than 20 countries.

At The Drivers HQ we sell Sam's Detailing online with UK delivery and in our Ilkeston shop. The products our customers ask for most are Snow Foam, Shampoo, Ceramic Boost, Ceramic Foam and the Drying Towel. If the one you want is out of stock, choose Notify Me When Back in Stock on its page and we will email you as soon as it is back.

Pre-wash and wash. Snow Foam goes on a dry car: about 100ml in the foam lance bottle, topped up with warm water, left to dwell for around 10 minutes without drying on the paint. It is slightly alkaline neat and pH-neutral once diluted, when it is safe on wax, sealants and ceramic coatings. Shampoo is a slick, pH-neutral shampoo for the two-bucket method, one or two squeezes in the wash bucket. Citrus Pre-Wash and Insect Remover loosen grime before the contact wash, and the Lambswool Wash Mitt and Microfibre Wash Mitt do the washing.

Wheels and tyres. Wheel & Tyre Cleaner is ready to use, acid-free and high-foaming, and it turns from green to brown as it breaks the grime down. Sam's does not recommend it on chrome alloys: use Wheel Soap on those. The Flexi Alloy Brush, Mini Flexi Alloy Brush, Tyre Brush and Wheel Arch Brush reach the barrels, spokes, sidewalls and arches, and Tyre Shine leaves the sidewalls with a glossy wet look, wetter still with a second coat.

Decontamination. Iron Fallout Reactor and Tar & Glue Remover lift what a wash leaves behind, then the Clay Bar with Clay Lubricant, or the Clay Mitt, leaves the paint smooth.

Polish and protection. Glaze, 3 in 1 Polish and Scratch Remover are worked by hand. Ceramic Boost and Ceramic Foam add protection as part of the wash (see the next tab), Signature Paste Wax and Ceramic Wax are applied by hand, and Exterior Detailer tops up the gloss between washes. Wrap Detailer is made for matt wraps and leaves an even finish with up to a month of protection.

Drying. The Drying Towel is a 600gsm, 28 x 36 inch twisted-loop towel. Let its weight do the work instead of pressing, wash it by hand or in the machine, and always let it dry naturally, never in a tumble dryer. Microfibre Wash keeps towels and cloths absorbent.

Interior and trim. Interior Detailer, Leather Cleaner and Leather Protectant, Fabric Cleaner and Fabric Protectant cover the cabin. Rubber & Trim Dressing is water-based and gives interior and exterior plastics and rubber a deep matt finish. The Signature and Vanilla air fresheners finish the job.

Kits and bigger sizes. The Starter Kit, Sample Kit and Detailing Bag Kit put a set together, and the Expert Range comes in bigger bottles: Snow Foam 4L, Ceramic Boost 4L, Wheel Cleaner 4L and Shampoo 2.5L.

Shop Sam's Detailing by type: snow foam, car shampoo, wheel cleaners, wheel brushes, ceramic foams, drying towels and tyre dressing.

Ceramic Boost or Ceramic Foam?

Both add a water-beading layer as the last step of a wash, and Sam's rates both at up to three months of protection. You only need one of them.

  • Ceramic Boost is a spray-on, rinse-off protector for paint, windows and wheels. After shampooing and rinsing, spray two or three squirts onto a wet panel and rinse it off straight away.
  • Ceramic Foam goes through a foam lance: 50ml with 200ml of water for one application, or 200ml topped up to a litre to keep for later. Cover the washed car, rinse it off at once and dry it. In a pump foam bottle, use 25ml instead of 50ml.

The protection can last up to three months, but Sam's recommends Ceramic Foam about once a month to keep it topped up. Ceramic Boost on top of Ceramic Foam adds nothing, because the foam already carries enough protection.

With either one, test a small hidden area first, keep off hot panels and direct sun, and never let the product dry on the car: over-applied or dried product leaves marks that need an IPA wipe to remove. Store both at 5°C or above. Dry the car with the Drying Towel afterwards. For frequent use, Ceramic Boost also comes in a 4L Expert Range size.
