About Hayburner

A quarterly magazine solely funded by sponsorship from the people and companies that make the VW industry what it is. Hayburner works hard to bring you a full-length, size and quality publication full of features written by real enthusiasts just doing what they love.

A Brief History of the Magazine

Around 7 years ago a discussion was made sitting around a campfire with some friends with a few beers, discussing the current UK economic climate and how it was affecting the VW scene/industry. At the time the editor, Ned was doing auto jumble just to keep afloat and to make rent. This was the night the Hayburner concept was thought up. “I’m not sure when, but the idea had been discussed and was still in my banging head when I woke up. The idea was to start a company that benefitted everyone involved. Businesses get to push their products at a very cheap rate and the people get a free magazine to read.”

38 issues in and the concept is still going strength to strength concentrating on air cooled builds, VW/Porsche stories, keeping up to date with classic car enthusiast news and features.

The Brand

Hayburner

Hayburner is a UK magazine for the air-cooled Volkswagen scene, and it calls itself the largest independent air-cooled Volkswagen magazine in the world. It covers air-cooled builds, VW and Porsche stories, and classic car news and features. Since 1 October 2022 the regular magazine has been a free digital download for readers anywhere in the world, and Hayburner Plus is a bigger printed edition with extra features, sent four times a year to subscribers. The team also attends and trades at around 10 UK and European shows each year.

Hayburner clothing and caps

Tees and vest. The Fuchs Black Edition Short Sleeve Tee carries artwork by Mad Maxim and has a unisex fit, in sizes S to 2XL. The Black 'Classic' Baseball Shirt is a white tee with long black raglan sleeves and the HAYBURNER logo screen printed across the chest. The Grey Vest top is screen printed with a unisex fit. Check the size notes on each product page before you order.

Warmer layers. The Burgundy Sweatshirt has the logo screen printed in black on a Gildan 50/50 sweatshirt. The College All Black Jacket has white stripes on its knitted collar, cuffs and waistband, white press studs, welt pockets and an embroidered H on the left chest.

Cap and socks. The All Black Trucker Cap has a panel front, a netting rear and the Hayburner logo embroidered in gold. The Pascha Socks come as two pairs, one brown and one black, in one size for UK 6 to 11.

Looking after them. Wash printed tees and sweatshirts inside out at a low temperature to protect the print, and spot clean the cap with a damp cloth so it keeps its shape.

How the magazine started. Hayburner began with a chat around a campfire with friends about how the UK economy was affecting the VW scene. At the time the editor, Ned, was trading at autojumbles to pay the rent. The idea was a free magazine for the community, low advertising rates for businesses, and work for feature writers and photographers. The name is an old 1950s hot-rodders' term for a car that will always cost you money.

Back issues. We stock Issue 38 (Summer 2021) and Issue 33 (Spring 2020), both from the years when the printed magazine was free. Each is full of air-cooled builds and VW and Porsche features, and makes a good read between jobs on your own car.

For the garage and the bar. The Steel Bottle Opener is British made and 13cm long. The Beer Mat Coasters come as a set of four for the workshop or the living room, and the Black and Gold Lanyard has the Hayburner logo and web address printed in gold, with a metal clip for your keys.
