Expert Notes

The Alchemy Qube Soft Clay Bar is a soft, fine detailing clay supplied as 100g in two 50g bars. It sits in the decontamination stage of a detail, after washing and before polishing or protection, lifting bonded contamination such as overspray and tar that a wash alone will not shift. Alchemy describes it as ideal for frequent and regular use, so it suits enthusiasts maintaining their own car as well as detailers. Use it with plenty of clay lubricant, and Alchemy pairs it with its own Qube Lube. Keep clean microfibre towels to hand for wiping residue, follow with a polish, glaze, wax, sealant or coating, and store unused clay in an airtight container.

Perfect For / Suitable Surfaces

  • Painted body panels
  • Bonnet and roof
  • Doors and wings
  • Boot lid and tailgate
  • Painted bumpers
  • Lower panels with tar spots
  • Paint with overspray

Caution: Only clay a freshly washed, well lubricated surface, and throw away any piece that has been dropped, as trapped grit will scratch paint.

How To Use

Application

  1. Wash the car thoroughly first so only bonded contamination is left on the paint.
  2. Break a small piece off one of the 50g bars and warm it in your hands until it becomes pliable.
  3. Flatten the clay into a patty and spray Qube Lube generously over a small section of paint and onto the clay.
  4. Glide the clay along the lubricated paint with light pressure until you no longer feel it grabbing.
  5. Reapply lubricant whenever the surface starts to feel dry under the clay.
  6. Fold the clay to expose a clean face before moving on to the next area.

Aftercare

  1. Wipe lubricant residue from each finished section with a clean microfibre towel.
  2. Run your fingertips over the panel inside a thin plastic bag to check it now feels smooth.
  3. Throw away any clay that has been dropped or is too soiled to fold clean.
  4. Store unused clay in an airtight container so it stays clean between details.
  5. Protect the freshly decontaminated paint with a wax, sealant or coating.

Top Tip: Work one small section at a time so the lubricant stays wet under the clay from start to finish.

  • Paint left smooth and glass like
  • Pulls bonded dirt away from paint
  • Soft clay suited to frequent use
  • Prepares paint for polish or protection

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Qube Soft Clay Bar remove?

It removes stubborn, bonded contamination that washing alone will not shift, including overspray and tar. Alchemy says it leaves a smooth, glass like finish.

How much clay is in the pack?

The pack holds 100g of clay, supplied as two 50g bars. Break off a small piece to work with and keep the rest sealed.

Is Qube a soft or aggressive clay?

Qube is a soft, fine clay that Alchemy describes as ideal for frequent and regular use. It grabs onto bonded dirt and pulls it away from the paint surface.

Do I need a clay lubricant?

Yes, Alchemy directs you to use Qube alongside Qube Lube and to keep the paint well lubricated. Clay should never be rubbed across dry paint.

How do I know when a section is finished?

Keep passing the clay over the section until you no longer feel it grabbing. Then fold the clay to a clean face and move to the next area.

How should I store the clay?

Keep unused Qube clay in an airtight container, as Alchemy recommends. Keep it away from heat and dust so it stays clean between details.

What should I do after claying?

Wipe off the lubricant, then polish if needed and protect the paint with a wax, sealant or coating. Claying is a decontamination step, so it is followed by protection.

The Brand

Alchemy

Alchemy Car Care was developed from what the company describes as years of grassroots detailing experience. Rather than building the range around a catalogue of existing products, Alchemy says its formulas were repeatedly developed, tested, adjusted and tested again before release. Testing was carried out across different vehicles, paint types and paint colours, with the aim of producing products that worked in the way the people behind the brand wanted to use them themselves.

That practical approach is still reflected in the range. Products are generally straightforward in purpose, with clear applications rather than unnecessary overlap between multiple versions of the same chemical.

A Range That Covers the Detailing Process

Alchemy has built a broad car care range covering pre-washing, contact washing, chemical decontamination, paint preparation, polishing, protection, interior cleaning, wheels and tyres. Grime provides the citrus pre-wash stage, Whitewash covers snow foam, Dirty Harry handles contact washing, while Chemical X and Diss-olve tackle iron contamination and tar. Further through the process, One Hit provides single-stage paint correction, with products such as Shell Suit, Duck Tail and Suga Coat covering different methods of adding protection and finishing the vehicle.

The range extends beyond liquids into clay, applicators, microfibres, brushes, buckets and other detailing accessories, allowing Alchemy products to be used through much of a complete exterior and interior detailing process.

Practical Chemistry With Useful Dilution

Practical Chemistry With Useful Dilution

A notable part of Alchemy's cleaning range is its use of concentrated products rather than relying solely on ready-to-use formulas. Grime Citrus Pre-Wash, for example, can be adjusted from around 10:1 for heavier contamination through to 100:1 for lighter cleaning, while also having applications beyond exterior pre-washing. Whitewash Snow Foam and Dirty Harry Shampoo are also sold as concentrated products, allowing the user to alter product strength or quantity according to the level of contamination and the job being carried out.

Alchemy is based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and its range is also distributed to the detailing trade through Linntec. This places it firmly within the UK detailing market, with products covering enthusiast maintenance as well as the larger sizes and concentrated chemicals useful to regular and professional users.
