Expert Notes

The California Scents 2D Palm in Ice is a palm tree-shaped scented paper freshener, and California Scents describes the Ice fragrance as notes of rich leather, soft suede and freshly-applied aftershave. It hangs by its loop from the rear-view mirror and comes as a single palm in a sealed package, which holds the fragrance until you open it. It gives a strong, intense scent through the vehicle, so it suits drivers who prefer a leather and aftershave style scent to a fruity one. It also works at home, in the office or in an RV. Clean and vacuum the cabin first, and hang it where it cannot touch trim or glass. It is made in China.

How To Use

Using it

  1. Open the sealed package only when you are ready to hang the palm.
  2. Hold it by the loop so the fragrance stays off your fingers.
  3. Hang it by the loop from the rear-view mirror or another secure point.
  4. Check that it hangs clear of your view of the road.
  5. Make sure it cannot rest against the dashboard, trim or windscreen.

Making it last

  1. Clean and vacuum the interior first so the scent starts in a fresh cabin.
  2. Hang it where air can move freely around the paper.
  3. Air the car briefly after opening if the scent feels too strong for you.
  4. Replace the palm once you can no longer notice the fragrance.
  5. Wash your hands after handling the scented paper.

Top Tip: Hang it from the mirror stem, not the mirror glass, so the mirror stays correctly adjusted.

Performance Benefits

  • Fills the cabin with leather and suede notes
  • Helps cover unwanted cabin odours
  • Adds a bright palm tree look
  • Leaves cup holders and pockets free
  • Freshens pet areas and smelly spaces
  • Brings the scent home or to the office

HQ Suggests Tips & Insights

  1. Remove the old palm before hanging a new one so scents do not clash.
  2. Keep the paper dry and take it down before valeting the interior.
  3. Check it does not tangle with a dash cam cable or mirror mount.
  4. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  5. Vacuum mats and seats regularly so odours are not trapped in the cabin.
  6. Store it unopened in a cool, dry place until you need it.

The Brand

California Scents

California Scents is an American car air freshener brand, now part of Energizer Brands. In its own words, it transforms your car and your mood with powerful scents that deliver the fun energy that only comes from California, and its scent names follow the coast: Newport New Car, Monterey Vanilla, Laguna Breeze, Coronado Cherry, Shasta Strawberry and Capistrano Coconut. Its range takes in sprays, under-seat scent blocs, cans, gels, foggers, paper hangers, pump sprays, vent clips and vials.

At The Drivers HQ we stock California Scents online with UK delivery and in our Ilkeston shop. Popular choices include the Palms in Coronado Cherry, the Palms in Newport New Car and the Car Scents can.

California Scents Palms paper hangers

The Palms. California Scents calls its Palms paper hanger super cute and so California: a scented paper disc with a palm tree design and the scent name on a wavy band, with a hanging loop for the rear-view mirror. The maker says it gives a strong, intense scent in a car, truck or SUV, comes in a sealed package to keep the fragrance until you open it, and also suits an RV, a bathroom or a laundry room.

Single Palms by colour. Coronado Cherry is hot pink with the scent of tart cherries, and Shasta Strawberry the softer rose pink. Newport New Car is bright blue, Ocean Wave deep teal and Laguna Breeze the palest turquoise. Monterey Vanilla is purple with a pink sun, Capistrano Coconut tan with brown palms, Ice silver grey with black palms, and California Clean completes the set.

Four packs. One card holds four palms with a scratch and sniff spot on the front, in Coronado Cherry, Shasta Strawberry, Ice and the yellow Tropical Colada.

California Scents Car Scents cans

The can. The California Car Scents can sits in a cup holder or under a seat, so nothing hangs from the mirror. Inside a recyclable aluminium canister, a biodegradable fibre pad holds organic fragrance oil, and the vented lid twists to set how much fragrance comes out, which also stretches its life. The can is spillproof, and once opened it freshens for up to 60 days in a car, van or truck, or a room at home. It is made in the USA.

Fourteen scents. The can comes in Tropical Colada, Capistrano Coconut, Concord Cranberry, Coronado Cherry, Fresh Linen, Golden State Delight, Ice, Laguna Breeze, Malibu Melon, Monterey Vanilla, Newport New Car, Santa Barbara Berry, Shasta Strawberry and Verri Berry. The maker describes Ice as crisp notes of aftershave, smooth suede and rich leather.

Getting the best from it. Freshen a clean cabin: vacuum the carpets and seats and deal with the source of any smell first. Open the lid fully for a stronger scent in a bigger vehicle, and close it down for a lighter scent or a longer life.

A can or a few Palms in a favourite scent make a simple stocking filler for any driver. Shop more under-seat and can air fresheners and air fresheners and odour control.
